San Bernardino County's H.O.P.E. Team Bridges Gaps for Homeless in "Operation Shelter Me"
In an operation aiming to address the plight of the unhoused in the Morongo Basin, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team, or H.O.P.E., executed an outreach program called "Operation Shelter Me" on Friday, September 20. According to a report by the Sheriff's Department, the initiative spanned a full day of engagement—10 hours from dawn until afternoon—where deputies and support staff worked diligently to forge connections between the homeless population and essential services.
Bridging gaps, the HOPE team scoured the community from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., seeking to assist those struggling with significant mental health issues especially. H.O.P.E. found 54 individuals without homes, wherein, offering referrals, 33 were nudged towards assistance programs—a step, albeit small, toward a possible redefinition of their lives. The team, having identified two homeless families, succeeded in linking all four family members to housing. The department's report outlined that ten others received connections to follow-up professional services.
The county, participating actively in Laura's Law, has opened doorways to court-ordered treatments—a preventive approach targeting a demographic often entangled in webs of bureaucratic dismay. The law, aimed at offering help to individuals who have previously undergone hospitalization or incarceration and who have histories sometimes marked by violence, however, did not find its match in this particular outreach. "During this operation, no subjects were contacted who appered to be candidates for assisted outpatient treatment," the Sheriff's Department declared.
Understanding that community concern is not just a reaction but a mandate for action, the County Board of Supervisors has earmarked funds specifically for these matters. These resources, under the label "Community Concerns" funding, will uphold further operations by H.O.P.E. across San Bernardino County in an ongoing effort to reconcile the often overlooked needs of its homeless residents. Those knowledgeable of individuals in homeless circumstances are encouraged to reach out to the H.O.P.E. Team at 909-387-0623 or via email at [email protected].
