No Killian Hayes, no Dariq Whitehead, no problem. The Long Island Nets looked to get back in the win column on Saturday night as they played their first of two games in two straight days against the Texas Legends. Despite getting off to a rocky start, Long Island got better as the game went on and walked out of Texas with the win, 110-103.
The win can be largely attributed to the play of two of their biggest players, 6’8” Tosan Evbuomwan and 6’10” Drew Timme. Evbuomwan is on a two-day; Timme is hoping for a call-up.
Evbuomwan finished the game with 22 points. He connected on eight of his 17 shot attempts but only hit one of his six attempts from beyond the arc. Evbuomwan’s impressive game didn’t end there. He also led the team in rebounds with 13, including defensive rebounds with nine. Evbuomwan also picked up a trio of assists and even had a steal and a block to round out his impressive day on the stat sheet.
As for Timme, we saw an equally impressive game from him, as he was tied with Evbuomwan for team lead in points with 22. He was only one rebound behind Evbuomwan, picking up yet another double-double, with 12 boards. He picked up a whopping nine offensive rebounds, leading to a number of second-chance points for the team.
Timme didn’t have the best shooting game tonight, as he was only able to convert on nine of his 19 attempts, including just two of his six attempts from deep. To round out his impressive day, Timme picked up four assists and one block.
Two other physical bigs, 6’7” Oshae Brissett and 6’8” Trevon Scott, also had double-doubles. Brissett, a member of last year’s Boston Celtics NBA championship club, picked up 14 points and 12 rebounds. After being troubled by hamstring issues and the flu, Brissett has become someone coach Mfon Udofia can count on. As for Scott, it was 10 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
Terry Roberts once again flirted with a triple-double, Arguably playing the best basketball of his entire career. He finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Roberts, who a year ago was in a Philadelphia hospital on a ventilator fighting for his life, has shown that in the absence of Killian Hayes and Reece Beekman, he’s someone who can be trusted to get his teammates involved.
The Nets are now 10-11 in the G League regular season, a game and a half out of the playoffs with 13 to play. However, Long Island will also have to jump over three teams in the tight race for the last post-season spots.
The first quarter opened with Long Island quickly getting down by 10. However, Long Island fought back to enter the second quarter down only seven. After outscoring Texas, 33-21 in the second, Long Island entered the half in the drivers’ seat, as they led the game 61-56.
In the third, Long Island continued to go off on Texas, the Mavs affiliate, as they once again outscored them, 31-21. Come the fourth quarter, Texas tried to fight back to get back into the game, outscoring Long Island 26-18, but ultimately, Long Island wasn’t able to get caught, winning the game by seven points thanks to those strong second and third quarter.
Jazian Gortman led the Legends with an impressive double-double, tallying 30 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. Phillip Wheeler added 20 points and four rebounds, while Jarod Lucas also contributed 20 points with four three-pointers.
