ACC Transfer Portal Breakdown: Florida State
As SMU football nears its first season competing in the ACC, On the Pony Express will break down the transfer classes of every team in the conference.
The series continues with Florida State, currently ranked No. 2 out of 17 teams in the ACC. The Seminoles have 26 players leaving and 17 coming in.
That gives Florida State an Index Score of 50 in the On3’s Team Transfer Portal Index.
Florida State Transfer Class Breakdown
FSU has the second-highest average rating of incoming transfers in the ACC. The class is headlined by a pair of former five-star recruits and current four-star transfers. They are quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and EDGE Marvin Jones Jr.
There are another seven former four-star recruits joining the Seminoles, too. Of those seven, five are transferring from Alabama. They are linebacker Shawn Murphy, offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson, receiver Malik Benson, cornerback Earl Little Jr. and running back Roydell Williams. The other two are Jalen Brown (WR, LSU) and Cam Riley (LB, Auburn).
Top Offensive Transfer: QB DJ Uiagalelei
Uiagalelei is back in the ACC after one year at Oregon State following the start of his career at Clemson. He started all 26 games played of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, following two starts in 2020, but with his starting job in doubt for 2023, he made a change.
Uiagalelei threw for a career-high 2,638 yards and 21 touchdowns to seven interceptions while completing over 57% of his passes in 12 games for the Beavers. That puts him over 8,300 yards for his career.
Florida State still won even when Jordan Travis was out due to injury, but it still wasn’t enough to get a College Football Playoff berth. Now the Noles have another elite playmaker running the offense.
Top Defensive Transfer: EDGE Marvin Jones Jr.
Jones was starting to come into his own for Georgia at the end of last season. He earned his first career start in the SEC Championship game against Alabama.
Of his 12 tackles last season, 4.5 went for loss including one sack. Jones also had a fumble forced and a fumble recovery in 12 games. Most of his 13 games in 2022 came on special teams with some reserve work.
Jones was the No. 4 EDGE and No. 20 prospect overall in 2022 by the On3 Industry Ranking.
Key Losses
Offensive tackle Bless Harris is the top rated transfer out of Florida State after starting five of his 11 games played this past season.
Tight end Markeston Douglas had 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown. While receivers Vandrevius Jacobs (3-60, TD) and Goldie Lawrence didn’t play much for the Noles, but are both thought to have a big upside.
Defensively, corner Greedy Vance had five starts in 14 games played with 18 tackles and an interception. Defensive lineman Malcolm Ray played in all 14 games as a reserve, finishing with 19 tackles, including two for loss, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries.
