Students from Spain excited to start school in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — It's an exciting time for local kids heading back to class, but especially for two students from Spain.
12 News caught up with a teacher, and her daughter, who are taking advantage of a unique opportunity in New Bedford after a trip across the Atlantic.
"I really like it here because it's really different from Spain. I feel like I learn more in school than in Spain," 15-year-old Theresa Jacob said.
Her mother, Maria Jose Reig, will be teaching Spanish in the district for a fourth year.
"I thought it was a very good opportunity for my kids to come here and to have experience here living in the U.S.," Reig said.
She is one of 21 educators working with DESE and the Embassy of Spain to address the need for Spanish teachers in the district.
There are nearly 13,000 students in New Bedford schools this year. More than 3,000 of them are Spanish speakers, including nine from Spain.
"Here I'm going to do a lot and make a lot of friends," said 10-year-old Joan Pazos, who is from Madrid.
"We want to learn from the U.S. Department of Education," Reig added. "That's why we chose Massachusetts because we know Massachusetts is the best, and we also want to come here to grow as a person."
