Man wins $4M lottery ticket in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — While shopping for a friend's birthday gift, a New Bedford resident ended up receiving a present himself.

According to the Massachusetts State Lottery, Robert J. Ostrye Jr. claimed a $4 million prize on Monday from a $10 "4,000,000 Monopoly Doubler" instant ticket he bought while selecting a birthday present for a friend.
NEW: Online lottery sales now legal in Massachusetts
Ostrye opted for the cash prize, receiving a one-time payment of $2.6 million before taxes. He plans to use the winnings for home renovations and to help others.
The Massachusetts State Lottery said Ostrye purchased the winning ticket at Jay’s Wine & Spirits on Dartmouth Street, which will receive a $40,000 bonus for the sale.
