Will Bolt explains how he will decide between pitching Jackson Brockett, Will Walsh
The Nebraska Cornhuskers earned a No. 2 seed in this year’s NCAA championship tournament. The Cornhuskers will play in the Stillwater regional, home of the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
As Nebraska prepares for their opening game of the round against Florida, head coach Will Bolt fielded a few questions about his rotation. One of which was, if needed, how he would decide between pitching Jackson Brockett and Will Walsh. Bolts also revealed that there is a third individual in play for the opportunity.

“Yeah, probably,” replied Bolt when asked whether or not matchups would play a factor in that decision. “You got (Drew) Christo in the mix now, too. But he’s been such a valuable piece out of the pen. It’s hard to imagine, short of some continued great starting pitching, where we guys are going ahead of nine innings, that you don’t use Drew in one of the first two games out of the pen. So all those guys would potentially be in the mix for a game three in a tournament setting; it’s matchup-based, too. Like you said, who you play and you think might match up with the opponent.”
Bolt has no shortage of arms he can utilize during the regional round and possibly further. And given his comment, he will do his best to ensure that he puts the right pitcher on the mound to ensure success for Nebraska in Stillwater.
Bolt on Josh Caron missing All-Big Ten honors
Bolt was also quite upset that his catcher, Josh Caron, wasn’t named to any of the All-Big Ten Baseball teams.
The Big Ten champions go into the NCAA Tournament at 39-20 and will head to the Stillwater Regional to take on Florida Friday. Caron was a big part of the run to this point.
But, he didn’t receive any honors amongst the other top players in the conference.
“Yeah, I thought it was pretty ridiculous that he wasn’t at least named somewhere in there, right,” Bolt said. “I mean, they’ve got three teams now. That’s not to take anything away from the catchers there because the three counters that were honored were incredible. Their stats pop off the page, all three of them.
“But then you’ve got the utility, the DH, you know, there’s a way to slide guys (into) all conference teams that are deserving and you know, certainly the coaches are aware of (Bolt’s) presence. In fact, before the tournament started coach Mercer, I sat next to him in the coaches meeting when we first got to Omaha and he’s like, ‘man, Caron, that guy’s a dude isn’t he?’ I’m like yeah. Six home runs later he’s you know, he’s kind of taken on a totally different persona.”
This season, Caron is batting .309, has 19 RBI, 42 hits, 22 doubles, three triples and a .434 slugging percentage.
