Lottery player wins $1 million from a scratch-off but says she wasn’t ‘too surprised’ even after losing $240,000
A TENNESSEE woman was not all that shocked to find that she had won the lottery with a scratch-off.
She managed to take home a huge $1 million lottery prize – but lost a good chunk of it in the process.

Karen H. from Shelby County, which houses Memphis, described her million-dollar win in last week’s Tennessee Lottery as an exhilarating experience.
She added, however, that it was not entirely unexpected, per Tennessee Lottery.
“I always believed I would win,” said Karen, a project manager at a marketing company, explaining how she always knew she would win.
“I surround myself with good thoughts, and wonderful things just manifest in my life.”
Karen secured the seven-figure prize from a 100X instant ticket she played while visiting the Nashville area.
She bought the winning ticket at M & M Martin in Nashville.
Karen was among numerous Tennessee Lottery winners statewide, who collectively received $21,851,709 from May 26 to June 1, 2024.
MINOR LOSS
Despite her major win, Karen had to experience some loss too when it came to her winnings.
In Tennessee, lottery winnings are exempt from state taxes, per Wise Voter.
However, they should note that federal income taxes may still apply to their winnings.
Those federal income taxes still apply to lottery winnings across all states.
As previously mentioned, lottery winnings are considered ordinary income for federal tax purposes.
The federal tax rate can be as high as 37% for amounts over certain thresholds, depending on the taxpayer’s filing status and other income.
For Karen, she ended up having to pay about $240,000 for her prize.
UP YOUR SCRATCH-OFF ODDS
Scratch cards offer a fun opportunity to try and win some quick cash without a significant investment.
Much like the lottery, they rely entirely on luck.
However, some strategies can enhance your chances of winning on scratch cards, per Casino.org.
The sheer variety of scratch cards available today can be overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with them.
With so many different designs, prices, prizes, and brands, making a decision can be challenging.
To improve your chances of winning, it’s important to stay focused when purchasing scratch cards.
While it might be tempting to go for the cheaper tickets and buy several, they have lower prize pools for a reason.
A better strategy is to buy fewer, higher-priced scratch cards. In the case of scratch cards, quality truly outweighs quantity.

Some scratch card players advocate a strategy of buying their scratch cards in bulk.
Casino.org advises acquiring around five cards from the same game in a single trip instead of purchasing one card at a time and making multiple visits over time.
They argue that manufacturers often distribute winning cards evenly throughout their batches.
Therefore, by buying in bulk, players believe they heighten their chances of obtaining a winning card compared to spreading out the same number of purchases over several visits.
However, it’s important to only employ this approach if it aligns with your budget.
Meanwhile, a North Carolina man secured a $100,000 jackpot with just a $20 investment in a scratch-off ticket.
And an unidentified winner walked away with an impressive $2 million prize from a $30 scratch-off ticket, boosted by another win.
