Health Violations at Nakama Japanese Steakhouse in Pittsburgh Prompt Consumer Alert
In a troubling revelation for diners, Nakama Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, located in Pittsburgh's vibrant South Side, has been slapped with a consumer alert. The Allegheny County Health Department imposed the alert following an inspection that revealed several health code violations, including dead rodents within the establishment. As reported by CBS News, an inspector found a dead mouse and droppings in the dining room, and dead mice were also discovered in the basement and under a hibachi grill. These conditions pose a potential risk to public health.
Critical issues with temperature control were noted among the infractions, with cooked crab, fried tofu, and cooked octopus found at unsafe temperatures. As indicated by Audacy, this is a significant misstep for a restaurant specializing in raw and cooked seafood delicacies. The Pittsburgh restaurant was cited for 18 violations, including "high risk" offenses. For instance, certain foods in the sushi display cooler reached a precarious 48 degrees, exceeding the mandated maximum of 41 degrees for cold-holding foods.
In addition to serious issues, the health department inspector found more violations, including improper cleaning and sanitization practices and weak measures to prevent cross-contamination. Reports noted poor employee hygiene and problems with plumbing and handwashing facilities. There were also concerns about damaged utensils, like a can opener with old food residue and an ice machine with dark buildup. These findings indicate a failure to meet the strict standards expected in the food service industry.
The inspector found signs of a serious rodent infestation, including droppings, nesting, and chew marks in different restaurant parts, including the dining areas and basement. There were also fruit flies in the basement prep area. These issues raise concerns about Nakama's operational standards.
