Murray’s hopes of playing at this summer’s Paris Olympics have also been thrown into doubt.
He will undergo a six-week recovery period following surgery, with Wimbledon getting underway in less than two weeks.
The event will run from July 1 and July 14, with Murray denied the chance of a farewell ahead of his planned retirement at the end of the year.
His withdrawal comes after he was forced to pull out of Queen’s due to a nerve issue in his right leg.
Murray could still say goodbye on-court if he misses the Olympics at either the US Open or Laver Cup.
Roger Federer said farewell to fans at the Laver Cup in London two years ago, although this year’s event is being held in Berlin.
Despite his Wimbledon setback, there remains a chance Murray can appear at the Olympics in Paris.
The tennis event begins in just five weeks time, running from July 27 to August 4.
