The company discreetly opened a one-day pop-up shop called “McDonnell’s” to hint at its connection without directly revealing it to customers.
The pop-up quickly garnered attention on social media, with some fans dubbing it a McDonald’s dupe.
However, in a twist that surprised many, McDonald’s was revealed to be behind the pop-up experience all along.
The McDonnell’s pop-up featured “The Chicken Sandwich,” a concoction that included two chicken patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, and pickles in a sesame seed bun.
In addition to the Chicken Sandwich, the pop-up sold other classic items such as beef tallow fries, deep-fried apple pie, and soft-serve ice cream.

Starting October 10, McDonald’s will officially launch the Chicken Big Mac at locations nationwide for a limited time.
The highly-anticipated menu item was previously tested in the UK and Ireland. It was also tested in Miami in 2022 to gather feedback from customers.
This sandwich retains the beloved Big Mac toppings — special sauce, lettuce, cheese, and pickles — while swapping out the traditional beef patties for two tempura-battered chicken patties.
Notably, the recipe omits the onions, offering a slightly different flavor profile from its predecessor.
Tariq Hassan, McDonald’s chief marketing and customer experience officer, expressed excitement about this new offering, stating, “With the introduction of the Chicken Big Mac, we’re excited to pay homage to one of our most iconic menu items, the Big Mac, and introduce it to a whole new generation of fans.”
This move aligns with the chain’s strategy of embracing consumer trends, including “dupe culture,” which revolves around finding more affordable alternatives to popular products.
In an effort to promote the Chicken Big Mac, McDonald’s has enlisted popular streamer and YouTuber Kai Cenat, who boasts an impressive 13.4 million followers on Twitch.
Cenat and his friends will engage with fans on his channel, assessing whether the Chicken Big Mac truly lives up to the iconic Big Mac name.
The launch of the Chicken Big Mac comes at a crucial time for McDonald’s as it seeks to reverse a recent decline in same-store sales, particularly among lower-income consumers.
The company introduced a $5 Meal Deal in June, which has proven effective in driving traffic to its restaurants.

Double Big MacThis limited-time burger features four 100% all-beef patties, pickles, shredded lettuce, Big Mac sauce, and American cheese.
Due to its success, McDonald’s has decided to extend the promotion through December, further cementing its market presence in a challenging economic environment.
