SEC schools begin pursuit of Gators DL commit Joseph Mbatchou
When Florida became the first Power 4 school to offer defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou of Grayson (Ga.) in late July, he wasn’t even ranked. Today, the Gators commit is a 3-star prospect whose stock continues to rise. Auburn, which offered Tuesday, and South Carolina are the latest to join the mix.
And, his plan is to visit both of them.
“Getting the Auburn and South Carolina offers meant a lot to me, but I knew they came after Florida,” Mbatchou told Gators Online. “I’m going to go to those schools to see how they are, see what type of people they have up there. But I don’t think anything is going to change my decision for right now.”
The Gators offered Mbatchou on July 27 during his visit to Gainesville for the annual Grill in the Ville recruiting event. He returned to campus a few days later, then committed to Florida on July 31. South Carolina offered him the following day.
Mbatchou, listed at 6-foot-6, 285 pounds, is an intriguing prospect. He’s the No. 111 defensive lineman in the country for On3 — even though he has never played in a varsity game. In fact, Mbatchou only took up football earlier this year. He previously had concentrated on basketball.
He plans to officially visit the Gators the weekend of Nov. 16 when they play host to LSU. Additionally, he said he likely will officially visit Auburn, Georgia State and South Carolina. That said, Mbatchou told Gators Online his commitment to Florida is solid.
“I feel good,” Mbatchou said. “My commitment with the Gators is still strong right now. With these schools coming in, I don’t think I’m going to change my mind anytime soon — or ever. I have a lot of love for Florida because they were my first really big offer. I think I’m going to stick it out with them. We talk from time to time, but they’re getting ready for their season and I’m getting ready for my season so it’s hard to catch each other right now.”
