WDSRA: Challenge to Triumph – Luke’s Story
Ever heard someone say they want a job that gives them a sense of purpose and fulfillment?
Maybe you’ve felt that way yourself. If not, let me introduce myself. I’m Sherry Manschot, the Marketing Manager for the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association.
I’m fortunate to have found both purpose and fulfillment in my work. By getting the word out about special recreation at WDSRA, I help individuals with special needs find joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. Additionally, I help families find a sense of fulfillment as they watch their loved ones overcome challenges and thrive.
Through our social and recreational programs, children, teens, and adults have opportunities to engage in life-changing activities – whether it’s joining a sports team, engaging in meaningful day programs, dancing with friends, taking trips without their parents, and so much more.
Simply put – special recreation transforms lives!

Meet Luke!
Luke is a boy with a BIG personality – sociable, affectionate, and funny. From a young age, he was determined to keep up with his twin sister and older brother. Luke’s mom, Jana, believed it was essential for him to be around his typically developing peers both in and out of school. While school provided the necessary support, Luke needed additional help to keep up and stay focused outside of it.
Living with Down Syndrome and anxiety, Luke can be a complex individual. He needs time to warm up to people and adjust to his surroundings, a need that can be difficult for peers to understand. Though he loves being part of a team, the journey was challenging.
That’s when the family turned to WDSRA Inclusion.
WDSRA’s inclusion support staff helped Luke manage his anxiety during programs, navigate transitions, engage with his peers, and grow more independent.
By the time Luke reached 3rd grade, sports had become too competitive for him to keep up. This led him to transition from inclusion services to WDSRA programs. Now 16 years old, Luke enjoys participating in soccer, t-ball, basketball, flag football, and more.
