Napa Valley 1839 FC Defeats San Ramon FC 2-1 to Advance in Golden Gate Conference Playoffs
By Napa Valley 1839 FC
Napa Valley 1839 FC kicked off their NPSL playoff run against San Ramon FC on Saturday, June 29th at Dodd Stadium in Napa, California.
The game kicked off at 7:00 pm with a packed house of over 825 fans. Even Napa Snappa, the alligator mascot the local kids love, was in attendance.
Multiple attempts from both Napa and San Ramon made for an exciting first half. In the 20th minute San Ramon got a breakaway and put the ball on target after beating Napa goalkeeper Javi Valdez in a one-on-one situation. Yet, Napa’s Alvaro Carerras somehow got back in a full sprint and saved the goal on the goal line, which was an amazing effort by the veteran defender.
Despite multiple chances by Napa’s leading goal scorer Dario Pavon, including a free header that went wide, the first half ended at 0-0.
The second half started off as exciting as the first ended with end-to-end play and much of the possession going to the visiting San Ramon FC. Valdez made some unbelievable saves to keep the score at 0-0 after 90 minutes.
The game would go into extra time, which included two 15-minute overtime periods. Nine minutes into the first overtime period, Napa’s Victor Cascon had a breakaway and beat the defender to bury one in the back of the net and give the home side a 1-0 lead.
San Ramon defender Kaden Standish got a straight red card, and San Ramon went down to 10 men early in the second overtime period. Just minutes after San Ramon went down to 10 men, Napa’s Cascon got an opportunity to slot a ball back across the 18-yard box. That’s where Dario Pavon controlled the ball and put it in the back of the net and pushed Napa’s lead to 2-0.
Almost immediately following the kickoff, a Napa mistake led to a goal by San Ramon’s Owen Benson.
At the end of the 120 minutes, Napa emerged as the victor in a 2-1 win.
The season ends for San Ramon FC, and Napa will now head to San Francisco on Saturday, July 13 for the Golden Gate Conference Final with El Farolito. El Farolito defeated Sacramento Gold FC 4-2 in the other Golden Gate Conference semifinal.
