“It’s actually a lot harder to write”: The Boys Creator Had a Hard Time Creating His Own Lex Luthor for the Show Who Has Divided Fans for the Wrong Reasons
A wait of two years finally came to an end as The Boys followed up its epic last season with the fourth installment. The first batch of three episodes dropped on June 13 and carried several surprises. However, arguably the biggest of the bunch came in the form of new characters of whom Susan Heyward’s Sister Sage shot up to the limelight. The latest addition boasts a character arc that will now have wide-reaching consequences for the show’s future.

On one end, the character’s manipulative tactics and her prime position on the Supes’ hierarchy make up for some of the most riveting scenes in the upcoming episodes, as per showrunner Eric Kripke. However, on the other end, a real-world divide has emerged within the fan base for reasons completely unrelated to the canon.
Moreover, the resulting outpour has only exposed a bitter truth that comes with stardom that has left several loyal viewers disheartened.
Season 4 of The Boys pulls off a dramatic twist
Spoiler Alert! This section contains spoilers for The Boys Season 4
The Boys opened up at the height of this tension with Antony Starr’s Homelander facing and coming out unscathed following a court trial. Following this, Sister Sage took center stage. Labeled as the smartest person in the world, the character became the prime advisor to Homelander.

However, her sinister motives involve manipulating the Supe as well as the general public by placing subtle baits and plots to create a world aligned with ‘Supe supremacy’.

Hell-bent on shaping chaos, Susan Heyward’s entry was no ordinary feat for the writers to come up with. In talks with IGN, Eric Kripke revealed that the task to think at a level enough to conceptualize a character “eight steps ahead” of others made them think beyond their usual capacities to outsmart anyone trying to predict the plot.
It’s actually a lot harder to write because the challenge of writing the world’s smartest person means that we have to be smart as writers, and then that is sometimes a very tall order.
The showrunner also admitted that,
Getting yourself in that head space is really hard because we’re not nearly as smart as her. I’ll tell you, writing dumb characters is much easier than writing smart characters.
The result, however, was remarkable. The actress’ on-screen presence fulfilled the show’s need for a daunting persona and fit the bill for being the smartest there is. Moreover, the parallels between Sister Sage and Lex Luthor from DC Comics stand undeniable with both sharing a similar intellect and desire to control the most powerful being in their respective planets, with the former simply being more chaotic and unhinged to fit the show’s daring scenes and themes.

In an unfortunate twist to The Boys’ brilliant casting of Susan Heyward as Sister Sage, a section of the fan base broke out with comments on alleged race-swapping and calls of being “woke”. In sharp contrast, the character is rather a completely original one created solely for the sake of the show and with no precedent in the comics.

Mentions of subtle race-stereotyping comments marred the welcome the latest entrant to the show deserved. As a result, a massive section of the fandom rose out in defense of the casting choice behind Sister Sage, calling it a perfect example of accurate portrayal because of her charisma and persona. Yet, the division of voice against the brighter side was evidently clear.

Beyond fans’ opinions, The Boys will have Sister Sage move ahead with the season and stand apart from the rest. Finding joy in exploiting the flaws in humanity and playing a crucial part in framing Starlight’s supporters by placing corpses within their rallies, she makes up for a brilliant watch in a season that is headed for an entirely new set of dynamics.
