Ja Morant on his expectations for Zach Edey: Definitely rookie of the year

Ja Morant isn’t shying away from putting strong expectations on the 7-foot-4 center. He believes Zach Edey could be taking hardware home at the end of the season. “Definitely rookie of the year,” Morant said of his expectations. “I think easily, too.” He said he wasn’t surprised to see Edey perform well in workouts, but it was an encouraging sign. Morant prides himself on summer workouts that he refers to as “boot camp,” and Edey held his own.Source: Memphis Commercial Appeal

Talked with Ja Morant today. His pick for rookie of the year won’t surprise anyone, but his confidence in it just might.

More on this storyline

Morant returned to Streets Ministries, where a year ago he surprised a group of kids at a basketball camp in Graham Heights. This time, he was with the Grizzlies as part of their “meals of hope” community event. Grizzlies players, staff and new investing partner Robinhood helped package 60,000 meals. The event had a competitive spirit to it, too, with each table trying to box the most meals. -via Memphis Commercial Appeal / September 19, 2024

In the eighth months since, other youthful NBA stars have risen in popularity due to strong regular-season play and postseason performances. It was something his agent, Mike Miller, noticed and questioned onlookers if they forgot what Morant brings to the table. Morant himself has noticed, too. “Aye, man, that’s what happens,” he said. “I love it. I don’t got no problem with it . . . I see all of it. I’m not worried. I like it even more. That’s just less pressure they’re trying to put on me. That makes it even more scarier.” -via Memphis Commercial Appeal / September 19, 2024

Does Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant and his on-court game remind him of his former Bulls and Knicks teammate, Derrick Rose? “I think so,” he said.  “I see it. I see a lot of similarities. They’re definitely hood favorites. It’s cool. I think there’s similarities in their explosiveness. Physically I think D-Rose is a little bit more explosive. There’s definitely differences in their game.” Noah also weighed in on which current NBA players remind him of his style of play during his hey-day. “I don’t think there’s another Joakim,” he said.  “Everybody’s different. You have similarities and certain things. But, maybe Draymond. I would say. Draymond would be the closest. I think he can shoot it a little better. But I think the way he leads, the way he passes the ball, the energy I see that he plays with I think those are all similarities.” -via ScoopB.com / September 6, 2024

As reported by Damichael Cole of Memphis Commercial Appeal, this workout was conducted by the Grizzlies star’s father, Tee, along with trainers Trey Draper and Jonathan Thomas. Per Cole, Draper has a history with Edey, with the former being an assistant coach at IMG Academy while the latter played on the team. -via Clutch Points / August 21, 2024

The Memphis Grizzlies are looking to put their disappointing, injury-ravaged 2023-24 season in the rearview mirror, and what better way to do so than to have star point guard Ja Morant back heading the controls of the offense. But Morant’s return isn’t the only cause for excitement for Grizzlies fans. They will also be getting the services of the 2024 Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Zach Edey, who will presumably be their starting center for the upcoming season. Fans got a glimpse of the future one-five pick-and-roll pairing after Morant posted a photo and video of himself working out with Edey at Southern Methodist University’s basketball facilities. The two appeared to engage in some helpful dialogue, which will bode well for how they connect on the floor as the backbones of the Grizzlies lineup. -via Clutch Points / August 21, 2024

Kyle McAlarney, 37, and Kieran Piller, 39, Priority Sports agents McAlarney joined Priority in 2020, and was NBPA certified three years ago, but already works with two of the agency’s recent lottery picks, Zach Edey and Keegan Murray. He’s also hands-on with clients, and gets on the court with them while overseeing Priority’s player development program, a role befitting a former All-Big East guard at Notre Dame. Piller has been with Priority for a decade, with clients that include Herb Jones and Bobby Portis, and also holds considerable responsibilities internally at the company founded by super-agent Mark Bartelstein. The two have a long history together — they were college teammates with the Fighting Irish. -via New York Times / August 21, 2024
