“That sucked”: Elizabeth Olsen Sacrificing One of Her Favorite Scripts for Avengers: Age of Ultron Was the Career-Defining Moment She Desperately Needed

Elizabeth Olsen’s career soared high after she starred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wanda Maximoff. The actress, who had been working on independent movies before her stint in the comic book movie empire, expressed regret about turning down a project she loved because of her commitment to Marvel Studios.

Understandably, she might feel like she missed out on many things. She played the mutant role from 2015 to 2022, and seven years would have given her more than enough time to explore many film genres and projects.
Elizabeth Olsen Left A Yorgos Lanthimos Movie To Join the MCU
Before she became the Scarlet Witch, actress Elizabeth Olsen was known as the youngest sister of the famous twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, both successful actresses during the ‘90s and early 2000s. The Marvel star lived in the shadow of her siblings until she forged her own path towards stardom.
In her early 20s, she started getting into independent movies such as 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House, followed by 2012’s Red Lights and Liberal Arts. In 2013, she joined John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings. A year later, she starred in the monster film Godzilla, her first big franchise project.

Her career took a sudden shift when she was cast in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron as Wanda Maximoff, a role she would reprise in five Marvel movies and one Disney+ series. Because of the demands in her contract, she had to fully commit to the role which also meant she had to let go of other projects that might cause conflict of schedule.

In her interview with Dazed, she admitted to dropping out of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, a promising job that didn’t align with her Marvel timetable. “That sucked. That was one of my favorite scripts I ever read,” she lamented.
She’s aware that her career would have looked different today if she passed on Avengers: Age of Ultron. There’s a high chance she would remain a relatively unknown artist or only be recognized as the sister of the Olsen twins. Now that she’s ostensibly done with superhero movies, the 35-year-old actress can choose whatever unique and curious project she wants.
What’s Next For Elizabeth Olsen?

Like the rest of the original Avengers cast, Olsen is carving another path for her career outside of the Marvel world. Her latest project, His Three Daughters, would certainly feel like coming back to her roots. Another upcoming movie from Todd Solondz entitled Love Child will star Olsen in the lead.

When asked if she’s willing to return to the MCU, she told Collider she’s happy to reprise the role as long as her character is used well. Despite playing Wanda Maximoff for many years, Olsen isn’t tired of wielding her powers and embodying the dark magic she holds. This may mean she has to commit to Marvel again, but that remains to be seen.
Avengers: Age of Ultron is available to watch on Disney+.
