Sydney Sweeney Packs a Punch as Boxing Legend Christy Martin in Christy

Sydney Sweeney is stepping into the ring—and into a whole new persona—as boxing legend Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy, directed by David Michôd. A newly released image from the film reveals a dramatic transformation for the Euphoria star, who is nearly unrecognizable with a fierce ’90s mullet, a jacked physique, and the kind of intensity only a fighter can channel. This marks a bold shift for Sweeney, coming fresh off her recent role in the Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley.

A First Look: Sydney Sweeney as Boxer Christy Martin
The film, simply titled Christy, stars Sweeney as the trailblazing boxer who broke barriers in the male-dominated world of professional fighting. While a few glimpses of the project have surfaced during production, this latest still offers the clearest peek yet at Sweeney’s physical and emotional transformation.

The image was released ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September, where it joins a stacked lineup that includes Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut. With this gritty role, Sweeney looks ready to deliver a knockout performance.
Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney opened up about the intense physical demands of portraying boxing champ Christy Martin. To fully embody the role, she underwent a months-long transformation that required a total lifestyle shift—including a rigorous workout regimen and significant dietary changes. Her dedication paid off, but it came with noticeable changes to her body and wardrobe. Here’s how Sweeney described the experience:
“I loved it. I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour. My body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”
While a specific theatrical release date hasn’t been announced, the film is scheduled to premiere at TIFF in September 2025.
