2 tropical storms — Nadine and Oscar — form in Caribbean Sea
The National Hurricane Center on Saturday is tracking Tropical Storm Nadine and Tropical Storm Oscar in the western Caribbean Sea.
As of 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Nadine was located 25 miles east of Belize City and 85 miles south east of Chetumal, Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and moving west at 8 mph. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 230 miles north of the center.
NHC said an increase in the forward speed is expected today and tonight.
On the forecast track, the center of Nadine is forecast to make landfall along the coast of Belize later this morning or early afternoon, and then continue across northern Guatemala and southeastern Mexico late this afternoon into tonight, forecasters said.
Weakening is forecast to begin this afternoon once Nadine is inland, and the system is likely to dissipate over southeastern Mexico by early Sunday.
Nadine is expected to drop 4-8 inches of rain with some areas getting up to 12 inches across northern Belize, northern Guatemala, and southern Mexican states from Quintana Roo westward to Veracruz.
Tropical Storm Oscar formed 190 miles east south east of the southeastern Bahamas and 495 miles east of Camaguay, Cuba with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and moving west at 13 mph. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 mph.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Turks and Caicos islands, southeastern Bahamas, Cuban Provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas. A tropical storm watch was issued for Cuba Provence of Camaguey.
On this track, the system should pass north of Hispaniola today, and move near the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeasternBahamas, and extreme eastern Cuba on Sunday.
NHC gives the system a 90% chance of development over the next two days.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has produced 14 named storms so far, including nine hurricanes. Three of those struck Florida. It also has now had two potential tropical cyclones, the first of which did not develop before making landfall back in September, but the reason the NHC is up to 15 in its naming scheme, despite 14 storms being named.
Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
