Injury time VAR drama lands punter’s ‘magnificent’ £36,000 five-fold

IT’S fair to say patience with VAR is wearing thin across football fans.
But there is one punter out there counting their blessings the technology is around after an injury time goal ruled offside bagged them a stunning £36,000 payday!

In an outrageous £20 wager, they selected five games to all end up all-square in games across the continent on Sunday.
Not just that, both teams had to score in each as they selected them on the BTTS and result market.
Amongst them were two games in La Liga with Alaves equalising with 20 minutes to go to draw 1-1 at Mallorca.
It was more dramatic in the other game as Osasuna and Valencia played out a quality 3-3 draw, with the 3-2 advantage the hosts had cancelled out by a cracking 87th minute equaliser by Rangers flop Umar Sadiq.
There was more drama in another of the games too, when Aberdeen fought back from being 2-0 down at half time to Dundee United to score in the 91st minute through Kevin Nisbet to complete the turnaround and steal a point.
Bruno Fernandes’ goal took the Manchester United vs Fulham FA Cup tie to extra time, with the Reds almost winning the game in the closing stages of the 90 minutes before being dumped out on penalties.
But all of this could’ve been pointless had VAR not stepped in to save the bet in the day’s earlier game.
Newcastle and Brighton were 1-1 in the scoreline and in the red card exchange too, looking set for extra-time.
However, euphoria descended on St James’ Park when Fabian Schar sent a stunning volley past Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal in the third minute of stoppage time.
A goal to win any cup tie, especially from the centre back.
But after an eternity in the VAR room, the goal as chalked off with Schar having started his run just too early and the game would end a draw, with the Seagulls advancing in extra time.
At this point, the punter must’ve thought their luck was in – and they were right.
Their £20 stake on the five-fold landed a stunning £34,350.84 and also banked a maximum £2,000 bet boost too – totaling a £36,350.84 payout.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “VAR has been criticised by many fans this season but this punter will certainly be hailing the technology after it helped them land a magnificent five-fold bet over the weekend!
“Fabian Schär’s injury time winner looked to have ended this punter’s hopes of a massive pay day, but VAR came to the rescue and ensured they walked away with a sensational £36,350.84, including a £2,000 boost to their winnings, from just a £20 outlay.”
