Tribe earns shutout against Wolfpack
William & Mary (5-3) earned a quality non-league victory, defeating North Carolina State 1-0 Thursday night in Raleigh. It was the Tribe’s final non-Coastal Athletic Association match of the year.
Leah Iglesias took a crossing past from the right wing by Molly Widderich and netted a left-footed shot in the 56th minute to break the tie.
The Tribe’s Jazzy Lorenz made four saves for a shutout, though the Wolfpack (2-4-1) outshot W&M 13-6. Olivia Pratapas had three saves for N.C. State, which was predicted to finish 12th in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
No. 2 UVA overcomes Miami
Two goals from Allie Ross and a second half surge sparked the Cavaliers on the road Thursday as No. 2 Virginia (8-0) won 3-1 at Miami (3-3-1) in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Ross’ header off Alexis Theoret’s free kick gave UVA a 1-0 lead in the ninth. The Hurricanes pulled even in the 42nd on Crosby Nicholson’s goal.
In the 77th minute, Ross rebounded a saved shot by Sophia Bradley on a race downfield for a 2-1 UVA edge. Tatum Galvin all but clinched the victory in the 79th minute, knocking in a Theoret free kick from point-blank range.
Hokies win ACC opener
Virginia Tech (6-2-1) opened ACC play with a 2-1 win at Clemson (4-2-2). It was the first victory over Clemson since 2014 for the Hokies.
Anna Weir’s second goal of the season, in the 64th minute, proved to be the game-winner. Taylor Lewin also scored her first collegiate goal for a 2-0 margin in the 71st.
The Tigers scored in the 73rd minute, but Tech’s Lauren Hargrove made four saves in the last nine minutes to ensure the triumph.
Wednesday, William Peace (2-1-1) defeated Regent 5-1 in Raleigh, North Carolina, thanks to two goals apiece by Cate Czyzewski and Emma Avery. For the Royals (1-2), Rhyan Primmer netted a penalty kick in the 47th minute.

ODU rallies from two sets behind
In a homecoming match for Old Dominion head coach Fred Chao, the Monarchs (6-2) rallied from two sets behind for a scintillating 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 21-19) victory over George Mason at the George Mason Invitational.
The Monarchs saved one match point and the Patriots (2-5) saved five before George Mason’s Olyvia Kennedy hit the ball over the back line to end the match.
Elisa Maggi had 17 kills and 10 digs, Myah Conway had 15 kills, Hailee Blankenship had 14 kills and Ashlynn Belcher had a career-high 42 assists and eight digs for ODU.
Avery Booker had 14 kills and nine digs for the Patriots.
Chao graduated from George Mason and coached the Patriots for two decades before coming to Norfolk in 2019 to become ODU’s first women’s volleyball coach.
The Monarchs will stay in Fairfax for weekend matches against Quinnipiac and Navy on the court he helped design.
UVA serves way past ETSU
Virginia (6-1) served 10 aces in its 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 25-13, 25-18) victory over East Tennessee State (4-3) at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The Cavaliers’ 10 aces tied for fifth-most in program history among four-set matches and first in such contests since 2021.
Collecting her eighth career double-double, Brooklyn Borum tallied 10 kills and 11 digs for UVA.
Virginia Wesleyan improves to 7-0
Salena Jones had 18 digs and 15 assists as Virginia Wesleyan (7-0, 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) breezed to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-12) home victory Wednesday night over Eastern Mennonite (2-4, 0-1). The Marlins, who are receiving votes below the top 25 in the national Division III coaches’ poll, also got 12 kills, nine digs and two aces from Hannah Smith and eight kills from Madi Schmidt.

JMU reveals non-league schedule
James Madison, which won the Sun Belt Tournament and finished 32-4 last season, announced its non-conference schedule.
It begins with a Nov. 4 game in Harrisonburg against Mid-American Conference foe Ohio in the MAC-SBC Challenge and will include a Nov. 9 contest at Norfolk State.
The Dukes will play at the Boardwalk Battle in Daytona Beach, Florida, from Nov. 21-23, starting with a game against Illinois-Chicago. They will be at home against George Mason on Nov. 29 and at Wake Forest on Dec. 17.

Stone, Aguilar win Charity Classic
Virginia Beach’s Laura Stone and Poquoson’s Charo Aguilar won the 9.0 bracket, the highest level, of the Charity Tennis Classic women’s doubles tournament this week at Kingsmill Tennis Club.
The event, which has provided more than $800,000 of support to Williamsburg-area women’s and children’s causes over a 31-year span, also included a 7.0 bracket. Lori Cox and Courtney Kellam, both of Virginia Beach, won that in their first appearance in the event.
Karen Johnson said this year the tournament provided $44,000 to Avalon, CASA, Franciscan Brethren of St. Philip and Latisha’s House.
Aguilar won the title for a seventh time and Stone for a fourth. They won pro-sets by scores of 9-7 and 8-4 before rallying past Tijen Ireland and Laurie Marshall 9-7 in the championship match.
Cox and Kellam downed Lisette Hayer and Cleary Maly 8-5 in the 7.0 main-draw final.
Karolee Towe of Williamsburg and Shelley O’Malley, who moved this year from Atlanta to Norfolk, won the 9.0 consolation bracket. The Williamsburg pair of Rebecca Hartt and Veronica Cummings took the 7.0 consolation bracket with two 8-0 triumphs.
