He Found Out His Girlfriend Was Cheating, So After She Moved Out And Left Her Dog Behind, He Gave Her Dog Away
When your partner cheats on you, it’s absolutely devastating, and you get to a point where you feel like you owe them nothing.
One man recently broke up with his ex-girlfriend, who he used to live with after she cheated on him with a co-worker. Then, when she never returned to pick up her dog, he re-homed it to his next-door neighbors.
For three years, he lived in a small home with his ex-girlfriend, who works as a teacher. He bought the home over ten years ago, so it’s in his name, but his ex would pay for half the mortgage each month.
“During that time, we discussed our future and made plans,” he said.
“We also got a rescue dog, [Haley], because she wanted one. I was willing to get one because I loved her at the time. It was always her dog, though. It is very difficult to get housing that allows pets, so she was overjoyed to have a dog.”
However, seven months ago, everything changed when he found out his girlfriend had been cheating on him with another teacher from the school she works at.
The other teacher was married, and his wife kicked him out when she heard about the affair. Then, his ex-girlfriend had the audacity to ask if she could move their affair partner into his house because he had nowhere to go.
He said no, and since his ex-girlfriend didn’t have a signed lease agreement on his house, she had to leave. He told her she and her new boyfriend could only move in with him if they paid around $8,000 on top of 2/3rds of their utility bill and monthly groceries.
“My ex and [her new boyfriend] didn’t have that kind of money [so] they ended up moving to a [lousy] apartment with a very long commute,” he explained.

“I don’t have time for a dog with my job, so I told her she needed to take her. She asked me to please take care of Haley until they found a place that accepts pets, and I did for six months. [My ex] started coming by less and less to see Haley. I had to take on more responsibility for her dog.”
While he was working or out of town, he started asking his next-door neighbor’s kid to walk and take care of Haley. The kid loved the dog and did an excellent job caring for her.
After realizing that his ex was not likely to take her dog home, he asked his neighbors if they wanted to keep her. They enthusiastically said yes, so he gave his ex a two-week window to get Haley before she went to live with the neighbors. His ex never responded and ended up blocking him.
“The neighbor kid took the dog two weeks ago to see how she did in their house [and] everything went great,” he said.
“Haley likes her more than she likes me, [so] I gave Haley and all her stuff to the neighbors. We went to the vet and had the microchip transferred to them. My ex called me [recently] to beg me to take care of Haley just a little longer, [though] she had not given me money for dog food or come by to see Haley in a month. I told her that I had re-homed Haley with someone responsible. She is telling everyone that I’m a [jerk] for giving away her dog.”
He feels that after paying Haley’s adoption fee, registering her in their state, paying her vet bills, and taking care of her while his ex practically abandoned her, Haley was legally his, and he could do what he wanted with her.
He can rest more easily knowing Haley is with a loving and responsible family and sees them with her in the park from time to time. His ex, however, is making him out to be a monster for what he did.
Was he wrong to re-home Haley, or was it the right thing to do?
