Deadline for new Northglenn pet rule is Friday

The deadline for limiting pet ownership in Northglenn is fast approaching.
Starting Friday, Aug. 1, Northglenn residents will only be able to have four household pets in every residence under an ordinance passed by the City Council.
The council voted for the ordinance in April to “maintain a balanced and comfortable environment for all community members,” according to a City of Northglenn news release.
Officials said they created the ordinance after extensive research and discussion. It was in response to concerns raised by residents over excessive noise and waste created by a high number of pets in some neighborhoods.
Many surrounding cities have long-standing pet regulations, and Northglenn was the only municipality in Adams County without a limit, the news release states.
Under the new regulation, each residential dwelling unit in Northglenn will be limited to:

A maximum of four dogs
A maximum of four cats
A combination of cats and dogs totaling no more than four

“We understand that many of our residents have strong bonds with their pets, and we want to ensure a compassionate transition,” the city’s news release states.
If you currently own more pets than the new limit allows, you will be eligible for a “previously owned pet exception.” This means residents will be allowed to keep their existing pets, provided they disclose them to the city by Friday, Aug. 1, the news release states.
To qualify for this exception, residents must submit a form listing each pet’s name, age, sex, breed, and the date acquired. You can find that form at www.northglenn.org/petreport.
Enforcement of the ordinance will not begin until Aug. 1, 2025. The city says in its news release that its goal is to work with residents to ensure compliance through education and outreach before any enforcement action is taken.
“If you don’t tell us about your extra pets by the deadline, it could result in enforcement action, including a potential court order requiring pet removal,” the news release states.
“By establishing reasonable pet limits, we aim to ensure that everyone living in Northglenn, both pet owners and non-pet owners, can enjoy their homes and neighborhoods,” the news release states.
