80s film star pours cold water on reboot claims as he admits ‘I hate to let fans down’

The Goonies fans will be devastated after one of the film’s stars has already poured cold water on talks of a sequel.
The cult classic, which was released in 1985, is regarded as one of the best films of all time and follows a group of kids discover a treasure map in their neighbourhood, sparking a grand adventure.
It was recently claimed a follow-up had been given a ‘greenlight’ ahead of production starting next year, but fans might have to wait a little longer.
Actor Robert Davi, who played villain Jake Fratelli in the movie, insisted a sequel is ‘not happening’ – at least for the time being.
He told the Mirror: ‘Let me put it this way. I think it’s just another rumour that has been going on for decades. We did get some word that it was not happening but, we’ll see.
‘I hate to let Goonies fans down, but the intel that I had is that it is not happening, but who knows?’

It might not be all bad news, as the Die Hard actor did wonder if the latest rumours have come from someone ‘testing the waters’ about a potential new film.
And he even suggested ‘everybody’ would be keen to reunite for a sequel, even if some fans are split on whether or not it should actually happen.
‘I think we would all love to be involved if it happened,’ he said, despite some trepidation with bringing back an iconic franchise. ‘[Fans] don’t want to see something that they love touched and then taint the initial taste.
‘You know what I mean? There’s always a danger in that when a sequel isn’t as good as the original.’

Some people have also questioned how the Goonies could return without Sloth after actor John Matuszak’s death in 1989, but Robert doesn’t think it would necessarily be an issue.
He has suggested there would be ‘two ways to handle it’, either by having someone else wear the makeup, or take another approach as a ‘tribute’.
He pondered: ‘He could have gotten plastic surgery extensively. Who knows? Or he could expire. There are different ways that could be handled, but who knows what’s best, he was such a loved character.’
