Red Sox News & Links: Sox Add To Bullpen

But don’t get too excited...

By Dan Secatore@DanSecatore

Why don’t they make the whole plane out of recently released Dodgers’ pitchers? Following the trade for the DFA’d James Paxton, the Red Sox acquired yet another pitcher waived by the Dodgers: Yohan Ramirez, who has an ERA over 5 and is already on his fourth team this season. This appears to be little more than a desperation move to bolster a bullpen reeling from injuries and attrition. If further moves are made (and they will be...right?), there’s a good chance the Sox ending up cutting him loose in a week or two as well. (Tim Crowley, NESN)

It’s not really fair to put Paxton in the same bucket as Yohan Ramirez, though. Paxton remains a useable innings-eater and, if the Sox can fix the control issues he’s been having this year, he could be even more than that. (Julian McWilliams, Boston Globe)

Paxton will get his first start for the Sox tomorrow against the Mariners at Fenway. Hopefully this 2-7 stretch will be a 3-7 stretch at that point. That’s still not good, but Alex Cora remains confident despite this bump in the road. (Christopher Smith, MassLive)

And anyway, Paxton isn’t the biggest name returning the field on Tuesday, because that will also be the day that Triston Casas begins his rehab with the WooSox. Hopefully it isn’t a long one. (Tim Crowley, NESN)

Who is going to make room on the roster when Casas returns? Dom Smith was a like-for-like replacement for Casas initially, but he’s provided some steady if unspectacular production over the past month that the Sox need. Regardless, at this time of year ballplayers are prepared to abruptly shuffled around. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
