Buzz Williams shares excitement for Texas A&M’s success in spring sports
Texas A&M is enjoying a tremendous spring across its athletic department, with sports like baseball, softball and basketball all making their mark in the postseason.
The basketball season has been over for a couple of months now, but Buzz Williams‘ squad kick-started a spring full of success for the Aggies. They performed well in the SEC Tournament yet again and parlayed that into an NCAA Tournament berth. They beat Nebraska in their first round game and then competing in arguably the most exciting single game of the tourney against Houston.
A&M made a double-digit comeback late in the second half and tied the game on a possession where the Aggies grabbed three offensive rebounds and then won a jump ball, as Andersson Garcia made a prayer of a 3 to knot it at 86-86. The No. 1 seed Cougars had their bench gutted by injuries already, and when more bang-ups and a couple of foul-outs occurred in the Texas A&M game, they had to resort to walk-on guard Ryan Elvin, who made the free throw to seal the win in the ensuing OT period.
Heartbreak for Texas A&M, but a Round of 32 exit and a roaring end to the year made 2024 worthwhile on the hardwood. And then, there’s all the other spring and summer sports making a push. At a recent interview, Buzz Williams commented on how much he’s enjoyed following every other Aggie team.
It’s a lot of fun. I’ve kept up with all of it, I watched,” said Williams. “I don’t know much about all of it. Obviously, I’m good friends with (Jim Schlossnagle), excited about them. And I watched every pitch of the softball game.”
Williams is keeping up with A&M on the diamond, and he’ll be rooting on the baseball team as they host their own regional this weekend, sitting pretty as the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. However, he’s had some relatable technical issues when trying to keep up with some of the other sports.
Couldn’t really figure out the coverage of tennis and golf, not very technologically sound, but we need to help them figure out how to do better on that,” Williams griped.
“But it’s pretty impressive: Swimming, golf, tennis, softball, baseball,” he listed, then addressing the track and field team. “I’m sure Coach (Pat) Henry is doing good. But I don’t know, they still have a little bit more don’t they?”
The answer was yes, the track team is still competing for a national title, to which Williams joked: “Coach Henry only counts national titles.”
With half-a-dozen sports competing at the highest level this spring, it’s a good time to be a Texas A&M fan or an Aggie coach like Buzz Williams.
