Beloved family-run bakery chain immediately shuts ALL stores after 55 years as owners say ‘it was a difficult decision’
A MUCH-loved bakery chain has announced it is shutting all of its stores with immediate effect after 55 years of business.
The Crusty Cob, a family-run artisan bakery, confirmed the closure of all nine of its shops across Devon and Somerset, explaining that the tough financial climate led to the “difficult” decision.

The business, which has been run by generations of the Tubbs family since it was founded in Exeter in 1969, stopped trading yesterday, March 4.
The closure affects branches in Exeter, Exmouth, Ottery St Mary, Honiton, Budleigh Salterton, Tiverton, and Burnham-on-Sea, impacting 102 employees.
In a statement, directors Neil, Howard, and Trudy Tubbs expressed their gratitude to staff and customers who have supported them over the years.
They said: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the closing of our family business, The Crusty Cob (Creations) Ltd.
“After 55 years of operation and four generations of the Tubbs family, the three directors have made this difficult decision to close our doors.
“The current state of bakery manufacturing, a shrinking customer base in the high street, inflation, energy costs along with wage and National Insurance increases have all contributed to this decision.
“Moreover, our industry has been in a constant downturn, making it increasingly difficult to sustain our business.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our workforce of over 100 employees for their tireless effort and work.”
Despite suffering “massive heavy losses,” the directors reassured that none of their suppliers are owed money.
The bakery was first launched by Michael and Patricia Tubbs, who brought their artisan baking skills to Devon.
Over the years, the business became known for its high-quality, additive-free bread and handmade pastries, supplying both its own stores and local catering businesses.
The company’s headquarters at Skyways Business Park near Exeter Airport is now closed, bringing an end to a much-loved institution in the region.
The family-run bakery built a loyal customer base over the years, and its sudden closure has left many wondering about its future.
Taking to social media, one user commented: “I miss their bakeries.”
