Hey Horka! What does the House settlement mean for Notre Dame football?
Last week’s House settlement will allow universities to directly pay student-athletes starting in the fall of 2025. This week’s Hey Horka! Blue & Gold message board mailbag focuses on that and much more related to Notre Dame athletics.
Will Notre Dame significantly increase scholarship numbers for non-revenue sports like baseball and lacrosse since the House settlement permits it now? — arrowfan624
More student-athletes on scholarships means more mouths to feed. More people to pay. So I think Notre Dame is going to be very cautious. Can’t put toothpaste back in the tube, so don’t let too much of it out too soon.
How do you think Notre Dame will allocate its $20 million in terms of percentages to various sports teams? — arrowfan624
Notre Dame is a progressive institution, so I speculate the Irish will reserve a larger share of the pie for women’s sports than other schools might. For instance, Notre Dame is going to be in the upper echelon of paying women’s basketball players. Football is obviously going to get the largest piece of all of this though. I’d imagine at least half of the $20ish million. Maybe more like 15 if the Irish can get away with it. Other schools definitely will.
Will all the changes from the House settlement make the playing field better or worse for Notre Dame? — arrowfan624
I honestly think the playing field stays relatively the same. The power players in respective sports are still going to be the power players. This is obviously designed for the purpose of parity, so the optimistic answer is Notre Dame will have a better shot of winning a national title than it did before, but coaching, executing on the field, etc. — all of the things that still have us saying 1988 in 2024 — will still matter and matter a lot.
Which team(s) have a better schedule and path to the playoff than Notre Dame? Who will Notre Dame face in the playoff? — DeeWhy
Ohio State’s schedule is honestly pretty favorable. Oregon, Penn State and Michigan are the toughies. The Game is in Columbus this year which helps. Penn State are fugazis so need not worry about them. I see the Buckeyes going 11-1 or even 12-0 this year. I don’t have the time to check out everyone’s schedule, but OSU’s jumps out to me as doable. As for who Notre Dame might play in the playoff, if you think the Irish will be a 5-8 seed and play a 9-12 at Notre Dame Stadium, you’re looking at teams like Ole Miss, Missouri, Utah. Aforementioned Penn State. Just way too early to really make an accurate prediction.
How does the House settlement affect Notre Dame? — dcwflyca
I think it’s a good thing for Notre Dame. Absolutely game-changing? I’m a little more skeptical. We’ll see. But ever since NIL popped up three years ago, Notre Dame has had the “the Irish aren’t like those other shameless, money-throwing schools from the SEC and they’ll never win the big one because of it.” Now, everyone gets to throw money. Legally.
Is the House settlement officially the end of the NCAA? — Bsmitty8
The NCAA is a cockroach and can’t be killed so I’ll have to see it to believe it, but this is definitely a big blow for an entity that has touted amateurism for years and years. These student-athletes are no longer amateurs.
Is there a surprise team on Notre Dame’s schedule like Louisville last year? — Kcndmis97
Georgia Tech. But Notre Dame tends to do so well in those neutral site games that I think the Irish will eventually be too much in Atlanta even if it’s close for a while.
What is Loren Landow’s most important objective this summer? — Nolnacs
So much to choose from here but I’ll say this … being tied at the hip with the sports medicine doctors and trainers and coming up with a plan for Riley Leonard that finally gets that wonky ankle right.
Name a player on offense and defense that makes you say, ‘How the heck is he not playing?’ — Mizzo
This is a good one and a tough one…
Offense: Aamil WagnerDefense: Brenan Vernon
How do you see Notre Dame getting down to 85 scholarships? — MVJ1120
Kevin Bauman medical retirement, perhaps. I’m staring at the scholarship chart trying to come up with anything else and I can’t. This might be the most down to the wire race to 85 that I’ve seen in my time covering Notre Dame. It’ll take a surprise or two or three.
Who would you like to see Notre Dame women’s basketball play in a regular series like the Irish have with UConn? — jrp3
Texas. They’ve only played twice ever, both times in Austin, once in 1986 and once in 1997. Texas is back (in women’s basketball). Notre Dame is back. Make it happen.
Where would you put the & chance Guerby Lambert proves a legitimate competitor for the starting job at either tackle spot? — jrp3
75% confidence he cracks the two-deep and, honestly, 25% confidence within that 75 that he can be a starter given what’s ahead of him. If he was an early enrollee there would be a ton of steam behind that line of thinking.
