The top Iranian military commanders killed in Israel's unprecedented airstrikes were together because they had been tricked into a meeting, an Israeli security official said Friday.
“We carried out specific activities to help us learn more about them, and then used that information to influence their behavior,” the official told Fox News.
“We knew this would lead them to meet — but more importantly, we knew how to keep them there.”
Spies had already infiltrated Iran, and preemptively targeted air defense systems and ballistic missiles -- making Israel's strikes even more deadly than expected, the official said.

At least 20 senior Iranian commanders were killed in Israel’s strikes on Iran on Friday, sources said. Six nuclear scientists have also been confirmed killed in the strikes.
The strikes came after talks to reach a deal on Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program failed, raising Israeli fears that Iran would produce a nuclear weapon.

Israel launched large-scale airstrikes against Iran, saying it had “no choice” but to destroy Tehran’s nuclear program — with Iran quickly responding Friday by launching 100 drones and calling it a “declaration of war.”
The strikes, which targeted nuclear facilities and missile factories in the Iranian capital, wiped out a swath of military commanders in what appeared to be the most significant attack Iran has faced since its 1980s war with Iraq.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Operation Rising Lion targeted several sites in a bid to dismantle the country’s nuclear infrastructure, ballistic missile factories and military — an effort to “roll back” Iran’s threat to Israel’s “very survival.”
