Burr Ridge, School Eye Village Hall Sale

BURR RIDGE, IL – Pleasantdale School District 107 is considering a property tax increase to cover part of the cost of renovating Burr Ridge Village Hall, which the district is looking at buying. The district recently sent residents a mailer about the possibility of buying the village building and converting it into a preschool. The district estimates buying and renovating the 40-year-old building would cost $12 million. It said it would pay for the project by dipping into its bank accounts, going into debt and raising property taxes. According to the mailer, the district would consider raising property taxes by $25 to $50 a year for a $500,000 house. That money would go toward the project's "life safety" aspects, which do not require a referendum. The district said it wants to expand early childhood opportunities by allowing for full-day preschool. That would free up space for fifth graders, who could move to the elementary school from the middle school. Over the years, to ensure enough space for kindergarten through fourth grade, the district has reduced the number of preschool classes and ended full-day offerings, the mailer said. The district hopes to renovate the Village Hall building in time for the 2027-28 school year. Village Hall is next to the police station, which the district sees as an advantage. "We believe that having a police station across the street from a school enhances the safety and security of the building and offers better protection," the district said in the mailer. "While the school is located off County Line Road, the play area will be situated in a courtyard behind it. Moreover, we plan to install a fence around the property to ensure the students' safety."At a January meeting, Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso revealed that Pleasantdale was interested in buying Village Hall, which he said needed millions in improvements. At the meeting, most of the Village Board appeared to favor building a new Village Hall next to Starbucks at the Village Center shopping complex. In an email days after the meeting, Pleasantdale Superintendent Dave Palzet told Grasso that board members Sean Mason and Jason Nash would enter preliminary discussions with the mayor on the purchase. Palzet praised Grasso's stewardship of the village. "The (school) Board wishes to express that our first priority during these discussions is to maintain the excellent working relationship between the Village and our District," Palzet said. Pleasantdale plans a community meeting on the potential Village Hall purchase at 6 p.m. Monday in the library at Pleasantdale Middle School, 7450 S. Wolf Road. The article Burr Ridge, School Eye Village Hall Sale appeared first on Burr Ridge, IL Patch.
