NFL players will be able to compete in the 2028 Olympics after owners approved a resolution allowing them to suit up for flag football.
The sport will be making its debut at the 2028 Games, and there has been much debate on who from the NFL would represent the United States if pros were eligible.
Now, the league has confirmed that NFL stars will be granted permission to compete in flag football.
'It's an incredible honor for any athlete to represent their country in the Olympics, which is the pinnacle of global sport' commissioner Roger Goodell said.
'I know first-hand that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has sparked a tremendous amount of excitement among NFL players interested in the chance to compete for their country on the world stage. We are thrilled that they will now have the chance.'
It's not clear yet who will be included on the team - with the Olympics more than three years away still - but Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson spoke to all 32 owners on Tuesday about the future of flag football, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was 'thrilled' that players could represent the USA in the Olympics
Many have tipped Patrick Mahomes to lead the flag team at quarterback in 2028
The NFL also ran a commercial during the Super Bowl of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts lighting the Olympic torch.
While many have assumed that Team USA will simply pick a team of NFL stars for the Olympics, there is actually a Team USA flag team already, and its quarterback previously suggested that NFL players should have to fight for their spots.
'We just don't think they're going to be able to walk on the field and make the Olympic team because of the name, right? They still have to go out there an compete,' Darrell Doucette told The Guardian.
'I think it's disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they're able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are - they didn't help grow this game to get to the Olympics,' he later continued.
Doucette later said he was 'better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game' in an interview with TMZ.
Team USA's flag team won the world championship last August for its fifth straight title, as they beat Austria 53-21 in the gold medal game.
