More gold for Simone?

Tim Perone

Reporting from Paris

After claiming gold in the team and individual all-around competitions earlier this week, Simone Biles is eyeing the top spot on the podium in the vault competition today.

If she wins, she would become just the fourth U.S. woman to win at least seven gold medals and would join Czechoslovakia’s Vera Caslavska as the only women ever to win two vault gold medals. Caslavska did it in 1964 and 1968.

Biles will face a familiar foe today in Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, who took gold in the vault at Tokyo and is the reigning world champion. Andrade took silver on Thursday in the individual all-around.

A half of possession for USWNT, but no goals

Alexander Smith

Reporting from Paris

Half time in the women's soccer quarter final between USWNT and Japan, and it's still goalless at 0-0.

The Americans have had 78% of possession, but without anything to show for it beyond a few semi-decent shots. Meanwhile, Japan's two promising attempts on goal will remind U.S. coach Emma Hayes that this contest is still very much in the balance.

Caeleb Dressel on his inner critic: 'Nothing is ever good enough'
Susan Baek

After winning five gold medals at Tokyo, Caeleb Dressel opened up about his struggles with being overly self-critical and how he has learned to develop a healthier relationship with the water.

So far at the Paris Games, Dressel helped win gold for Team USA in the 4x100m freestyle relay, but could not defend his gold in the 50m free and 100m butterfly. He will swim tomorrow to defend Team USA's gold in the men's 4x00m medley relay final.

Shots at either end in soccer

Alexander Smith

Reporting from Paris

After really struggling for possession in this first half, Japan has just had two very promising shots in just as many minutes.

First Mina Tanaka danced across the penalty box, only to prod a relatively tame shot at American goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. Then Miyabi Moriya latched onto to a chaotically bouncing ball in the penalty area, but her shot was high and wild.

Before that, USWNT had possibly its best chance of this quarter final, too, with Sophia Smith running onto a long ball after a flicked header from Lindsey Horan, but slicing her effort wide.

Almost 40 minutes gone here.

Golf: Tommy Fleetwood takes the lead with Xander Schauffele off the pace in third round
Sean Nevin

The overnight leaders are through 11 holes in the third round of the men's golf, and it is currently Team GB's Tommy Fleetwood that is at the top of the leaderboard on 13-under-par.

Fleetwood, who won the 2017 French Open at Le Golf National, was tied for the lead coming into the day with Team USA's Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. Fleetwood though has broken the tie, he is two-under for the round so far with Schauffele even-par. Matsuyama is one-over for the day.

Denmark's Nikolai Hojgaard has been the flier of the day, moving himself into medal contention with a brilliant round of nine-under-par. He currently sits on 11-under - the same score as Schauffele.

Spain's Jon Rahm is also having a good day on the course. He is three-under for the day through 11 holes and currently sits one shot behind Fleetwood. Rory McIlroy has also moved into medal contention - he is five-under for the day and sits on 10-under overall through 15 holes in this third round.

A track designed to break records
Freddie Clayton

Yesterday's brakeneck 10,000m race stunned the Stade de France as the top 13 finishers all beat the previous Olympic record, with Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei coming out on top.

It was a stunning race full of athletes at the top of their game, but this is also a track designed to break records.

Italian company Mondo has provided the track at every Summer Games since 1976, and this time they’ve gone back to the drawing board with records in mind, with a track engineered to produce fast times.

It took 10 weeks to install in the Stade de France, but Mondo says the track is its fastest yet, and 2% faster than Tokyo’s.

The women’s 200-meter world record, which has stood since 1988, could be under threat. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson set the second fastest time ever in 2023, and may fancy her chances on Paris' purple track.

Why is Hungary so good at water polo?
Freddie Clayton

The men's and women's water polo starts today in Paris, with Hungary's legendary men's team among the favorites to take home a gold.

In fact, the Hungarian men's team are gunning for their tenth Olympic gold medal in the event. Already on nine, they have won more than twice as many as the next most successful country.

The landlocked nation owes its peculiar dominance in the pool to its 1,300 thermal springs. The warm water allows Hungarians to practice for longer periods during the year, while they have fostered an aquatic culture in the eastern European nation.

They were also early innovators in the sport, which helped them toward a 110-match winning streak between 1928 and 1939, a run that included gold at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.

But since their last gold in 2008, they've suffered a relative drought. After failing to finish on the podium in either 2012 and 2016, the men only managed Bronze in Tokyo.

Will Paris see a return to form for the legendary side?

American soccer dominance, but not much to show for it

Alexander Smith

The first 15 minutes are up in the women's soccer quarter final between USWNT and Japan. And although the Americans have been utterly dominant — enjoying 89% of possession so far — they've only had one shot on target.

Japan hasn't been able to get near the neat triangles conducted by Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan in the midfield. But when it comes to the final third, the U.S. just hasn't had the quality needed to break the Japanese defensive lines.

The ancient origins of pommel horse and triple jump
Freddie Clayton

The men’s pommel horse event has attracted all sorts of attention in Paris thanks to Team USA’s Stephen Nedoroscik, who helped seal the bronze medal in the team all-around on Thursday.

The peculiar apparatus has since become a talking point, but its origins date way back to the ancient Olympics and the stables of Rome.

The pommel horse descends from a wooden horse used by the Romans to teach mounting and dismounting. Pommel horse featured in the ancient Olympics and was among the events at the first modern Olympics in 1896.

Team USA facing first Olympics without a male individual swimming gold since 1900
Sean Nevin

So far it has been an Olympics to forget for the American men in the pool — they have zero individual swimming gold medals so far and there is only one more chance to end that drought.

That will come down to Bobby Finke tomorrow night.

Finke qualified with the sixth fastest time this morning in the 1500-meter freestyle final. He is the defending Olympic champion and is set to face a stern test this time from reigning world champion Daniel Wiffen of Ireland. Wiffen has already claimed gold in the 800-meter freestyle in these Games.

IOC President says online abuse 'unacceptable' amid women's boxing dispute
Freddie Clayton

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has responded to questions surrounding the gender dispute over Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif of Algeria.

Both athletes failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year, but they were cleared to compete in Paris by the IOC, and have also always competed in women's divisions.

"We have two boxers who were born as women, who have been raised as women, who have a passport as a woman, and who have competed for many years as women," said Bach.

"There was never any doubt about them being women."

Khelif's win over Italy's Angela Carini Thursday provoked massive criticism online, including from prominent figures such as Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling.

"What we see now is that some want to own the definition of who is a woman," added Bach.

"All this hate speech, aggression and abuse...is totally unacceptable."

Models of boats donated for answered prayers hang in Marseille basilica as sailing events begin

The Associated Press and Freddie Clayton
The first sailing medals are up for grabs today as the women’s and men’s windsurfing events take place in Marseille.

The city is inextricably linked to its seafaring city, a reverence shown by the votive offerings that sit in its basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde.

Little model boats hang from its ceiling and maritime paintings adorn its walls. These are votive offerings, some more than 200 year old that residents of this Mediterranean port city continue to bring in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for everything from avoiding shipwrecks to successful rescues of migrants trying to make it to Europe on unseaworthy boats.

About once a month someone brings a new one — sometimes with an explanation, sometimes anonymously, most handmade.

A fresh set of Olympic medalists may have offerings of their own by the end of the day.

Badminton spectator dragged from arena for holding up Taiwan banner

Reuters

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the removal of a spectator from the badminton venue at the Paris Olympics for holding up a green banner reading “Taiwan go for it” during competition on Friday.

Taiwan competes at the Olympics as Chinese Taipei to avoid objections from China, which claims the democratically governed island as its own territory. Taiwan’s government rejects Chinese sovereignty claims.

Two Reuters journalists saw the spectator being bodily removed up a staircase, shouting, while Taiwanese shuttler Chou Tien Chen was playing.

“This violent act is not only ill educated but also seriously violates the spirit of civilization represented by the Olympic Games,” Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Saturday. “It is even more contrary to the rule of law and infringes on freedom of expression.”

Play is under way here at Roland-Garros where Team USA’s Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram are playing Australia’s Matthew Ebden and John Peers for a gold medal in the men’s tennis doubles.

Another supporter has just yelled over the pre-serve silence, “Do you want to marry me?” Perhaps that was a reference to the iconic moment at Wimbledon in 1996, when Germany's Steffi Graf was asked by a supporter, “Steffi, will you marry me?” She famously responded, “How much money do you have?”

Adding to the good vibes, the in-house brass band has struck up a rendition of the Addams Family theme tune.

Father of Algerian boxer caught in Olympics gender dispute calls it ‘immoral’ and ‘unfair’

Amar Khelif, father of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif who remains embroiled in a dispute over her gender, has slammed the debate surrounding his daughter and paid tribute to his "honourable" daughter.

Imane Khelif’s win over Italy’s Angela Carini on Thursday sparked global outrage after reports resurfaced that she failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year.

But there is there is no indication that Khelif identifies as transgender or intersex, and she has always competed in women’s events, including at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Having such a daughter is honorable because she is a champion,” he told Reuters. “The attacks against her are immoral, it is not fair, Imane is a little girl that has loved sport since she was 6 years old.”

“What’s up, Team USA? This is Noah Lyles, fastest man in the world.”

That is the bold claim Noah Lyles made in a video posted to Team USA's X account during the opening ceremony, and it's a statement that has many athletics fans around the world riled up and waiting to see if he can back it up.

The 27-year-old has never been short of confidence; after all, he is the reigning 100m and 200m world champion, titles that the Gainsville native says give him the right to the fastest man in the world title.

Jamaica's Kishane Thompson may have something to say about that. Both Thompson and Lyles have run personal bests this year in the 100m, but Thompson's was faster - 9.77 against Lyles' 9.81. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala has also gone quicker than Lyles in 2024.

Even so, Lyles is adamant he is the fastest man in the world, and now the time has come for him to prove it. "It’s me," Lyles said while laughing, doubling down on his fastest-man claim during a Team USA press conference this week. “It’s always going to be me.”

Lyles goes in the first heats of the 100m this morning at 5:55 a.m. ET ahead of tomorrow's final.

'It's just exciting': Olympic superfan on his 13th Olympic Games in Paris
04:52
Ron Isbell has attended 13 Olympic Games. He arrived in Paris with tickets to 40 different events.

Isbell, a distance runner in high school and college, got started on his own Olympic journey after he won a trip to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

"That got me interested in the Winter Games and I saw how much fun it was to go there, so just started going," he said. "Eventually I thought I'll just keep going to all of them as long as I can."

Isbell has brought about 800 Olympic pins with him to trade — part of his collection of more than 1,000.

"It's just a lot of fun to meet other people from other countries and they may not even speak your language but you're able to make a pin trade with them," he said.

At the Olympic Games, the vibrant display of national flags is always a highlight.

With the flags regularly appearing on scoreboards and celebrating throughout the events, it’s easy to spot their similarities, especially with colors like red, white, blue and yellow.

Ted Kaye, Secretary of the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), an organization that studies flag designs, discusses why certain colors are so common in flags and how they show historical influences and cultural meanings.
