Greenwich High School Varsity Cheer Team Wins State Championship
GREENWICH, CT — For the first time in nearly two decades, the Greenwich High School varsity cheerleading team won the state championship.The team captured the Class LL title on March 1 at Trumbull High School with a score of 98.5, the best among 96 teams across four divisions.On Saturday, March 1st, the Greenwich High School Varsity Cheer team won the Class LL State Cheerleading Championship at Trumbull High School for the first time in 18 years! (Courtesy of Deb Alza) Led by head coach Julia Vyskocil, the team made history twice this season, first with an FCIAC win on Feb. 1 after a 21 year drought, and, of course, their latest triumph on Saturday, the team's first CT state title in 18 years. The team has now qualified to compete at the Team of the Year State Opens competition March 8, and New England Regionals competition slated for March 22 in Worcester, Mass.Senior Cheer Captains, Sierra Erensen, Siera Rollins and Jane Trager, were asked to summarize their sensational season thus far. "Never have we experienced a team so dedicated and driven to succeed. Since the beginning, this team has shown that there is something special this year and that we have something to prove. The countless hours pushing ourselves above and beyond, trying to reach perfection was unmatched," said senior cheer Captains Sierra Erensen, Siera Rollins and Jane Trager in a joint statement. "Every girl on this team has shown so much love and trust with each other; in a sport like cheerleading which relies so heavily on teamwork, the need for everyone to be all in and giving 110 percent everyday is essential for success."The captains went on to speak about the work they have put in since last summer."This season has been everything we could have dreamt of- as seniors we have been working for this moment for years. This program has been building up and getting closer to a win each year. We never took our eye off the prize, and the losses made us more driven to win," they said. "Our success is a testament to the unwavering support and dedication of our athletes, coaches, and fans.
