NC State football’s recent history of camp commitments
Summer camps have always been a critical part of NC State football’s recruiting process under head coach Dave Doeren. Even as these events wane in popularity nationwide, the Wolfpack continues to stress the importance of in-person evaluations.
NC State secured at least one commitment in each of the past two recruiting cycle cycle from its camp process. Former four-star cornerback Brandon Cisse, now a true sophomore projected starter for the program, is the headlining member of that group.
Reaching back further into Doeren’s tenure, nickel Tyler Baker-Williams, defensive lineman B.J. Hill and do-it-all athlete Jaylen Samuels all earned their NC State offers at one of these events before developing into stars in Raleigh.
The Wolfpack kicks off its 2024 camp schedule Saturday, June 1.
Before then, let’s take a closer look at a few talented athletes the Pack added to the program through their standout summer camp performances over the past couple of years.
Cornerback Brandon Cisse, 2022
Cisse dominated one of the first camps of the year in 2022. He arrived on campus with offers from Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and other Group of Five programs. The cornerback left campus with his first Power Five scholarship and joined the Pack class 10 days later.
He immediately caught the coaching staff’s attention when he ran a 4.45 40-yard-dash. Cisse measured in at 5-11 ½, and he recorded a 6’3 ¼ wingspan. His 34.9-inch vertical jump also impressed TheWolfpacker.com.
After posting impressive measurables, the cornerback dominated one-on-one competition, generating plenty of excitement from the crowd watching from the sidelines. Cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell pulled him for a one-on-one conversation late in the camp, and he picked up the offer later that day. He returned for another visit just a few days later.
During his senior year, Cisse emerged as one of the top defensive backs in the country. He was unranked when he arrived in Raleigh for the camp, debuted in the rankings as a three-star prospect and eventually rose up to four-star status. On3 considered him the No. 245 recruit in the country and the No. 29 cornerback in the final class of 2023 rankings.
Linebacker Zane Williams, 2023
Zane Williams, a Wolfpack sibling legacy who attended nearby Wake Forest (N.C.) High, camped at NC State three years during his prep career. He dominated every time he took the Pack practice field, and he earned an offer the summer before his senior season.
During that camp, he competed with a couple of fellow linebackers who held Power Five offers. Williams clearly stood out as the best player in that trio. NC State was his first FBS offer despite an elite junior season that included 142 total tackles.
Williams checked into the camp at 5-10 3/4 and between 210-220 pounds. His 77-inch wingspan and above average athleticism, showcased with a 4.65 40-yard dash, a 4.37 5-10-5 shuttle and a 32.2 vertical leap, helped mitigate any concerns presented by his height.
The linebacker committed to NC State 6 days after picking up his camp offer.
Running back Isiah Jones, 2023
Isiah Jones , another local star out of Rolesville (N.C.) High, earned his scholarship after a lengthy evaluation process by the Pack staff. He camped June 9, 2023, and committed to NC State 1 week later.
The running back also held offers from Boston College, Columbia and NC Central. Jones impressed the coaching staff after measuring 5-10 3/4 and 189 pounds, running a 4.60 40-yard dash, recording a 34-inch vertical leap, a 9-8 broad jump and clocking a 4.33 5-10-5 shuttle time.
He rushed for 1122 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior and said NC State was always a dream school for him. Both Jones and Williams joined the Pack as three-star prospects.
