Fontana Deputies Seize Assault Rifle in Sweep of Homeless Encampments, Probe Underway
In a concerted effort to address the surge of criminal activity linked to homeless encampments in Fontana, local deputies joined forces with San Bernardino County Code Enforcement in a "Proactive Quality of Life Enforcement" initiative on June 21st. According to a report from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department, the area around the Fontana Speedway has witnessed a troubling rise in incidents ranging from drug sales, assaults with weapons, to property vandalism, precipitating complaints from both residents and business owners.
The operation, commencing around 9 a.m. centered around Calabash Avenue and San Bernardino Avenue, where deputies provided security and resources to those without housing. Abandoned RVs, recognized for being hotbeds for illegal activities, were searched and cleared. In the midst of this, deputies unearthed an AR-15 style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine from one of the problematic vehicles, triggering an ongoing investigation into the weapon's ownership.
Fontana Station deputies' discovery of the assault rifle underscores the gravity and potential danger that lurked within the encampments. The sheriff's department reaffirms its dedication to community safety and the "proactive enforcement is necessary to help restore quality of life issues for residents in the Fontana community," the official statement explained.
