“Turned Bleeding”: Jordan Chiles Reveals Why She Performs With Long Nails Despite Facing Troubles

You’d think that athletes, especially the ones who go hod to bars for dear life, wouldn’t keep long nails. However, you’ll surprised to know that Paris-bound Olympian Jordan Chiles prefers to keep long nails, even when she’s competing. While you may have the idea that long nails would cut into the skin while performing skills, they’re essential for the gymnastics icon.
In fact, the 23-year-old Olympic silver medalist is no stranger to this question. “People always ask me, ‘How do I do gymnastics with such long nails?'” Simone Biles’ team said while speaking with Associated Press. “To tell you the truth, they actually help me with my technique,” revealed Jordan Chiles in a statement that might sound surprising to many fans.
Jordan Chiles showed off her long, transparent, acrylic nails to the camera as she spoke. “I like to make sure I don’t break a nail. Have I broken one? Yes. Has one literally broken in half and turned bleeding? Yes…” Jordan Chiles told the Associated Press. However, despite these difficulties, Chiles continues to sport her exceptionally long nails with dotted pearl art.

For the Olympian, the long nails don’t just help with her technique but act as that “one little touch” unique to Jordan Chiles. However, the 23-year-old’s love for long nails or nail art isn’t the only thing that sets her apart. The Team USA gymnastics star is arguably the biggest Beyonce fan among the 592 athletes that the U.S. is sending to Paris. So Chiles has embraced it.
At this year’s Xfinity Gymnastics Championships, the Olympian sported a custom-made GK Elite leotard inspired by none other than Queen Bey. Jordan Chiles rocked the Rennaissance tour-inspired leo during the competition alongside a Beyonce backing track during her routine. Interestingly, you may be surprised to learn that Chiles isn’t the only one sporting long nails.
Did Jordan Chiles inspire her fellow gymnasts?
The Spring, Texas resident may sport the longest nails on the USA roster. However, her signature style statement may be catching on. Last year, Sunisa Lee won all-around gold while performing with long acrylic nails. Fans saw how Suni Lee’s nails sported a glossy white finish with the Olympic rings as nail art. The nail art perfectly complimented the champion’s achievement as she held the gold medal between her fingers.
Eagle-eyed fans have also spotted other gymnasts sporting similar Olympics-inspired nail art while performing on uneven bars. However, there seems to be a limit to how your nails can be before they become a hindrance. During her interview, Jordan Chiles said that head coach Laurent Landi “got mad” at her when the gymnast came into practice with nails nearly half as long as her finger.
A gymnast sporting log nails may seem off to the average gymnastics fan. However, as Jordan Chiles explained, they are significant in more ways than one.
