Like other positions on the Ole Miss offense, Charlie Weis, Jr. is very pleased with the tight end room

Last year, the Ole Miss right ends just couldn’t seem to catch a break.
Starter Caden Prieskorn hurt his foot early in the year and missed three complete games and was hobbled during a few more.
The very talented Michael Trigg went off the rails and had to be dismissed from the team. Hudson Wolfe, who was finally healthy for the first time in two years, broke a collarbone and was out seven games. Kyirin Heath never really caught on to the system enough to gain a lot of trust from the coaches and Jayvontay Conner was still in college football diapers.
This time around, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Charlie Weis, Jr. is much more content with where the tight ends are as August camp continues.
“Caden has had a tremendous camp so far,” noted Weis. “I think he’s just continuing to make strides. He’s playing fast and smooth and making a lot of plays in the passing game. We look for him to be more featured in the passing game this year.
“He’s also a great run blocker. He’s the total package at tight end – he can put his hand in the dirt or he can get in the slot and be a threat in the passing game. Look what he did in the Peach Bowl in receiving – double figure receptions and a couple of touchdowns.”
Then there is Wolfe, healthy again, and Virginia Tech transfer Dae’Quan Wright.
“I think both those guys have done a really good job of knowing what to do, getting line up and making plays in camp,” Charlie added. “Both of them have done good things in the run game too. That’s yet another position battle as we go through camp watching those two guys fight it out for playing time.”
(Since this interview, Hudson has been donning a black jersey meaning no contact, but we have been told it’s not a serious injury.)
Charlie also likes the look of the true freshman – Dillon Hipp, 6-6 240-pounder.
“Dillon just needs to keep learning from the veterans and keep working hard. He has a good skill set,” Weis stated.
The bottom line for Weis is that he feels the Rebel offensive attack will need the top three for sure and maybe more as Hipp continues to learn.
“I’m excited about the potential of that room and certainly believe we will need all of them during the year,” he said. “I also believe we are going to be more active in the passing game with all our tight ends.”
The Rebel right ends look the part as well.
Prieskorn is 6-5 255, Wolfe is 6-7 250, Wright is 6-4 250 to go along with Hipp.
“They all make big targets and they all run well for their size,” Weis closed.
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is known for utilizing the tight end position and this season will be no different.
