Three new trustees join board of The Christian Chronicle
OKLAHOMA CITY — In a legendary journalism career that stretches back 50 years to his high school days, Jerry Mitchell has earned dozens of the profession’s top awards.
In 2009, his intrepid reporting earned him a $500,000 “genius grant” — a fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Now, the 1982 graduate of Harding University in Searcy, Ark., and longtime member of the Skyway Hills Church of Christ in Pearl, Miss., has accepted an appointment to the The Christian Chronicle’s national board of trustees. Mitchell joins Josh Kingcade, senior minister for the Preston Road Church of Christ in Dallas, and Paul Maynard, chief growth and strategy officer at Harding, as the Chronicle’s newest governing board members.

“Journalism is about truth, and I see a tremendous parallel between journalism and the Bible,” said Mitchell, senior investigative reporter for Mississippi Today. “God doesn’t pull any punches in telling stories. We get the truth.
“God loves justice, but you’ve got to have truth first,” added the author of the 2020 memoir “Race Against Time: A Reporter Reopens the Unsolved Murder Cases of the Civil Rights Era.” “That’s why I think what I do in my daily job is a ministry and a calling. And I think what The Christian Chronicle does is a calling, as well, to tell the truth of what’s going on … among churches.”
Like Mitchell, Kingcade and Maynard both grew up in Churches of Christ and recall reading the Chronicle in their high school days.
“I grew up attending the same congregation my whole childhood,” Kingcade said, referring to the Faith Village Church of Christ in Wichita Falls, Texas, “so the Chronicle was really my first window into Churches of Christ more broadly.
“I think the Chronicle staff does an outstanding job covering all kinds of news and events in our fellowship,” he added. “I admire their award-winning journalism. I’m honored to join a board that represents so many regions and perspectives in our fellowship.”

Maynard, a former longtime elder and worship leader for the Woodbury Church of Christ in Minnesota, said: “I love my Church of Christ and Restoration Movement heritage. I appreciate that each church is autonomous, but things like The Christian Chronicle, universities, church camps and special events bind us together.”
