GamStop reports busiest period of self exclusion
GamStop has recorded a period of record engagement with its national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling during the first half of 2024.
The non-profit organisation reports that more than 49,000 people have self-excluded from online gambling sites in 2024 so far.
In April, GamStop recorded its highest-ever month for self-exclusion registrations since its inception in April 2018, with 8,686 new registrants applying for self-exclusion from online gambling websites.
During the first half of 2024, GamStop registered a total of 49,500 new applicants, bringing the total number of users of its self-exclusion scheme to 482,815.
The UEFA Euros championship had a noticeable impact, with registrations increasing by 8% for the first half of July (knockout stages) compared to the same period last year. Registrations spiked on three particular days: the day after England’s group stage victory over Serbia, the day after England’s extra-time last-16 victory over Slovakia, and the day after the final.
These increased registrations highlight the influence of major sporting events on gambling behaviour, prompting individuals to seek assistance in managing their gambling habits.
Fiona Palmer: GamStop
Fiona Palmer, CEO of GamStop, emphasised:“The increasing number of registrations we have seen in the first half of 2024 could reflect a growing awareness and proactive approach among individuals to tackle gambling-related issues.
Palmer also stressed the importance of reaching younger demographics, as the average age of registrants continues to fall. GamStop reports a 12% increase in self-exclusions amongst 16–24-year-olds, which is a particular concern.
The age drop highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions and educational initiatives to prevent gambling-related harm in younger age groups.
Nearly half of all registrants choose the maximum self-exclusion period of five years, which indicates a strong desire for long-term protection and support. This trend shows the necessity for ongoing development of support services and resources to help individuals maintain their commitment to self-exclusion.
Moving forward, GamStop plans to enhance its outreach and support efforts, ensuring that those who register for self-exclusion receive comprehensive guidance and resources to help them navigate their recovery journey. Collaboration with stakeholders across the gambling industry, healthcare providers, and support organisations will be key to reinforcing the safety net that GamStop offers.
