Starmer says Trump WOULD defend Europe from Putin after PM ‘helped Zelensky write patch-up letter to Don’

SIR Keir Starmer has insisted Donald Trump would “have our backs” and defend Europe from Vladimir Putin.
It comes as diplomatic efforts intensify following the US president’s shock decision to freeze military aid to Ukraine.

In response to a question from Kemi Badenoch about security guarantees for Ukraine, the Prime Minister said Trump had made “absolutely clear” his commitment to NATO’s Article 5 and agreed that officials should further discuss what guarantees might look like.
But behind the scenes, Starmer has been at the centre of a frantic diplomatic push to keep the Western alliance together, even as Trump’s hardline allies push to abandon Ukraine.
As Trump announced the freeze, Starmer worked behind the scenes to repair ties between Washington and Kyiv.
In a direct call with Zelensky, the Prime Minister urged him to back Trump’s peace plan and critical minerals deal.
Hours later, Zelensky posted on X: “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.”
He acknowledged their meeting had “not gone the way it was supposed to” and called for “constructive” future cooperation.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin’s closest international ally, Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, has claimed the Russian tyrant never intended to start a years-long war with the West.
“Putin didn’t expect it would turn into such a war,” Lukashenko told interviewer Mario Nawfal on X.
“When he saw a huge number of people dying, Putin instantly agreed to the negotiations to stop the conflict.”
Lukashenko also claimed that former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had blocked a peace deal in 2022, saying: “Johnson came there and forbade Zelensky to agree to peace. He pushed Zelensky once again to war.”
As European leaders scramble to manage the crisis, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced he will address the nation tonight at 8pm local time.
He wrote on X on Wednesday morning: “My dear compatriots, at this time of great uncertainty, when the world is facing its greatest challenges, I will speak to you tonight.”
His speech follows an emergency summit in London, where Macron met with Starmer, Zelensky, and other European leaders to coordinate a response to Trump’s decision.
With Ukraine’s future hanging in the balance, all eyes are now on Washington – and whether Trump will accept Zelensky’s carefully worded olive branch.
