She Went Missing After Visiting A Local Convenience Store In 2008, And Her Car Was Later Found Abandoned At The Bottom Of A Steep Cliff
Born on December 28, 1974, Marlo Moku of Hawaii was the eldest of her siblings, and when she was a teen, her parents got divorced. Then, her father sadly passed away not long afterward.
So, when she was young, Marlo was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Every two weeks, she would visit her local hospital to receive treatments.
However, Marlo mysteriously went missing in 2008, and leading up to her disappearance, her loved ones claimed she was not depressed.
In fact, the 33-year-old had three children – who were 10, 8, and 2-years-old. Marlo was also known to be a very dedicated mother, and her youngest sister, Kawehi Moku, detailed how Marlo’s mental health appeared stable after the birth of her daughter.
“From the time her daughter was born until she went missing, she was not sick,” Kawehi said.
Yet, even though her loved ones believe Marlo would have never just abandoned her children, she still vanished on September 23, 2008.
That day, she was last seen by her boyfriend and 2-year-old daughter at 11:30 a.m. in her home. Apparently, her boyfriend had returned home for his lunch break, and Marlo claimed that she needed to head to the store to buy a few items.
She also reportedly wanted to take their daughter with her. However, her boyfriend got her to leave their daughter at the house.
Later that afternoon, Marlo was spotted at a local 7-11 convenience store located on Kaumana Drive in Hilo, Hawaii, sometime between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. After that, she was never seen or heard from again.

Once Marlo failed to pick up her children from school that day, she was ultimately reported missing to the Hawaii County Police Department.
Just over two weeks after she went missing, her car – a blue 1995 Chevrolet Corsica sedan with Hawaii license plate number HTN-328 – was found abandoned on October 10. It was discovered at the bottom of a steep cliff located in Hakalau and reportedly had extensive damage. Additionally, the vehicle’s license plate was missing, and very few items were found inside the car.
According to Hawaii Police Department Captain Rio Amon Wilkins, natural elements caused a lot of physical evidence to be lost.
“Due to the area where it was recovered, a lot of physical evidence was lost due to the elements and the ocean water washing up on the vehicle. A mechanical inspection was done on the vehicle that determined that there were no defects to the vehicle itself,” Wilkins explained.
Yet, investigators never found any indicators of foul play. They used Luminol to test the inside of the car and uncover any blood traces, but nothing was found. This suggested that no one was actually in Marlo’s car at the time of the crash.
Then, in 2014, authorities also sent all the recovered items from the scene in for testing. But, Wilkins claimed the testing did not lead to any new information.
So, the exact circumstances surrounding Marlo’s disappearance are unclear, and her case – which is classified as endangered missing – remains unsolved. Despite this, both investigators and Marlo’s loved ones refuse to stop searching for answers.
“We need to be supportive of these families, of law enforcement. Making sure that we’re doing everything we possibly can until these girls are found,” said State Representative Stacelyn Eli.
“We’re not giving up. Days are hard, but we just keep pushing through. And we just hope and pray that we get answers,” said Marlo’s sister, Kawehi.
At the time she vanished, Marlo was five foot seven, weighed about 180 pounds, and had black hair and brown eyes. She also had a pink tattoo of the phrase “Sassy” on her ankle.
If you have any information regarding Marlo’s disappearance, you are urged to contact the Hawaii County Police Department at (808) 961-8300.
