Mississippi State commit Ferzell Shepard seeking more success in final prep campaign

Last season 2025 Mississippi State commitment and On3 three-star athlete Ferzell Shepard didn’t experience a lot of team success and encountered just one victory. Going into his final prep campaign at Scotlandville (La.) Magnet, Shepard is hoping to change those fortunes this fall.
Shepard was productive individually as a junior, totaling 37 catches for 719 yards and eight touchdowns. Last month he had a slow start to preseason practice but is starting to get geared up for the season. Shepard is rated as the nation’s No. 21 athlete and the state’s No. 17 prospect by On3 composite rankings.
“We’ve started practice but I was out for a little while,” Shepard explained. “I had an injury and I had to wear a brace. I hyper-extended my knee but I’m back practicing this week. I will be back at receiver and I hope I can play safety, too. I’ll be returning punts again, too, and doing whatever I can to help us have a bounce-back season.”
Shephard committed to the Bulldogs in June during his official visit to Starkville and did so over other Power 4 offers from Arkansas, Baylor and Texas Tech. He plans to be back on campus this fall at Davis Wade Stadium and is eager to see head coach Jeff Lebby and the Bulldogs’ offense in action.
“I know I’ll be there this season for some games and that should be fun,” remarked the 6-foot-1 and 170-pound Shepard. “I’m ready to be around that vibe again and be around guys in our class. I can’t wait to see Coach Lebby’s offense and see the shots he takes in the passing game. I think they’re going to do real good this year.”
Regarding his own future in the Maroon and White, Shepard also holds high expectations with that aspect. That was one of his talking points with receivers coach Chad Bumphis during Shepard’s recruiting process.
“I want to go in there and be WR1,” stated Shepard. “I talk to Coach Bump about that all the time and they want to build up the class around me. Coach Bump asks me all the time if I’m ready to get there and wants me to come in there prepared to hit the ground running.”
Outside of football was another factor that drew Shepard to Mississippi State. During his visits to campus, his talks with Lebby and his staff were just as much about his life outside of football as they were about the field.
“I really just like the coaches there and the atmosphere,” Shepard added. “They all make me feel like I’m at home already. All of the coaches show me a lot of interest in me as a player and as person. So I love that.”
Since mapping out his college future this summer, Shepard admits things have quieted down on the recruiting trail. And that suits him just fine heading into his senior campaign.
“It’s been pretty quiet since I committed,” noted Shephard. “I really haven’t heard from any other schools and I don’t have that pressure anymore. I like my decision and Mississippi State already feels like home for me and my family.”
