Tuesday’s Dawg Biscuits: Updates on 2025 prospects Jaylan Morgan, Trent Sellers and Stephen Miller
Step inside for the latest on several 2024 and 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football and basketball along with transfer targets:
First Biscuit – Starting the day with basketball and the transfer portal, on Monday I talked to a few sources regarding Mississippi State’s situation. Obviously, the clock is ticking and new transfers/incoming freshmen will start moving to Starkville this week in order to begin summer school classes next week along with summer workouts and offseason drills. Per sources, State is still looking to add a quality center but of course, those options are running low these days. Regarding the rest of the roster, you never say never but so far, it appears State will keep everyone that has committed to the Bulldogs via the transfer portal. So obviously there is a chance that State’s roster today will be the same roster we see open the 2024-25 campaign. As noted, if Shawn Jones ends up on scholarship for the 2024-25 season, then Mississippi State is currently at the 13 scholarship limit for the season.
Second Biscuit – Moving to basketball recruiting in the prep ranks, on Monday I did some checking with sources regarding a couple of 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar. As noted last week, Mississippi State has shown more interest lately in On3 three-star power forward prospect Jamarion Davis-Fleming of Canton High School, whose brother Javian Davis played at Mississippi State for a couple of seasons. Davis-Fleming also has LSU and Ole Miss on him and LSU has been on his radar for quite awhile now. This summer could tell us more about how serious things get between State and Davis-Fleming as he is expected to camp with the Bulldogs. Sources also noted that State remains in contact with Tennessee commit and On3 four-star center Dewayne Brown of Hoover (Ala.) High School. State coaches have watched Brown in AAU action this month and I expect Brown to remain on their radar for awhile despite his commitment to Tennessee.
Third Biscuit – Moving to football recruiting and catching up with 2024 Mississippi State signee Fred Clark, he is set to arrive in Starkville later this week to begin classes and summer workouts. Along with track duties (high jump) this spring, Clark said he trained a lot to be prepared for those summer workouts and is eager to get started. Clark noted that he has built a good relationship with defensive coordinator Coleman Hutzler over the past few months and that Hutzler has been telling him what to expect when Clark enrolls. Regarding his position, Clark said mike and edge linebacker have been mentioned but like most guys, it will depend on where he fits the best in training camp. To no surprise, Clark is still working on former prep teammate and Auburn commitment Tyler Lockhart, as well.
Fourth Biscuit – Moving to the Class of 2025, on Monday I exchanged messages with 2025 safety and On3 composite four-star prospect Jaylan Morgan of Rockvale High School. He just finished up his final spring session in high school and similar to last season, he was working on both sides of the ball but is being recruited as a defensive back. Morgan unofficially visited Mississippi State last month and has put the Bulldogs among his top favorites for a couple of months now. Morgan told me he has changed up his official visits for the month of June and now he plans to officially visit Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Georgia. With Georgia extending a recent offer to Morgan, obviously that could be a major task for State to overcome. But we will see how those visits go in June for Morgan.
Fifth Biscuit – Also on Monday, I exchanged messages with 2025 defensive end and On3 three-star prospect Trent Sellers of Faith (Ala.) Academy. He noted that several SEC programs stopped by his school this spring, including Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Tennessee. He has also picked up several new Division 1 offers this month, including another SEC offer from Arkansas. So far, Sellers said he has not set up any official visits for the summer but added that he is working on that process. Some of the schools he has in mind to possibly officially visit include Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss and East Carolina. He still remains somewhat under the radar on the recruiting trail but I believe that will change this summer.
And for the gravy on top – And lastly on Monday, I talked with 2025 defensive back prospect Stephen Miller of Greene County (Ga.) High School. Holding several SEC and Power 5 offers, Miller has June official visits set for Mississippi State, West Virginia and Kansas, and he plans to add another official visit or two before the summer ends. Miller was initially offered by State’s previous staff and said he has really locked in well with State’s new staff, particularly with cornerbacks coach Corey Bell, who watched Miller in spring practice earlier this month. Miller said he wants to make his college decision in July and that his official visits will be important when it comes to that decision. For now, he said Mississippi State and Kansas are on top of his favorites’ list.
