Julia Louis-Dreyfus Knows Which Role She’s Playing in Veep That Will Anger Many Fans: ‘I’m not a Kamala Harris type’

Does fiction really reflect reality, or is it the other way around? It’s the election year in the United States that brought Veep back to the top of the ratings charts, five years after it ended. The show was super popular in its time, but it feels completely timeless, showing people that politics will always have an impact.

Recently, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who played the character that made her famous, spoke about Selina Meyer and how people still remember her. She boldly admitted that, even though she doesn’t like it, there’s a lot of comparison between the fictional politician Selina Meyer and one of the current presidential candidates.

The new generation of voters can gain a better understanding of the political world by watching Veep, the 2012 HBO comedy series. A spin-off of The Thick of It, it stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as former senator Selina Meyer, who becomes vice president of the United States. Her lack of preparation is a recurring theme as she gets ready to take over the presidency.

It seems that’s exactly why some people have compared the character to Donald Trump, the presidential candidate in this year’s US elections. But, to the surprise of many — or maybe not — the actress herself has weighed in on this topic.
Without holding back, she, who has pledged her support for Kamala Harris, admitted that her character has nothing to do with her candidate. In an interview with MSNBC, she said:
Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person. I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.
The actress and the cast of the old show recently reunited for a table read hosted by Stephen Colbert to benefit the Wisconsin Democratic Party while Harris was campaigning in the key state.
Even before Louis-Dreyfus spoke out, fans of the series took to social media, sharing memes and making jokes about the comparison. In addition, according to Deadline, this even led to reruns and an increase in the show’s audience.
Some Have Also Compared Selina Meyer To Kamala Harris

Although the lead actress of Veep admits that Selina Meyer is practically a female version of Trump, some believe the character still has a hint of Harris. In this case, it’s not about the personality; it’s very much about the story.
The Simpsons has gained a reputation for predicting real-life events in its episodes, but it seems that the HBO series has also pulled off a similar feat, with Selina being elevated to the presidency after the president abruptly resigns.

Since Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the race, social media has been buzzing with comparisons between scenes and plot points from the show and real-life events. However, Armando Iannucci, the creator of the series, shared his thoughts on this in another article from Deadline:
Comparisons are inevitable. They have the same kind of career. Selena was a senator like Harris, and is then plucked from a powerful job into a job that’s frustratingly powerless. I wouldn’t want people to think that Selina was in any way modelled on Harris.
The series won 17 Emmy Awards during its seven seasons and achieved a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Veep is available for streaming on Max.
