Iowa politicians call for prayers for Trump’s safety

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 01: The U.S. Capitol Building on June 01, 2023 in Washington, DC. The Senate reached an agreement to vote on 11 amendments to The Fiscal Responsibility Act before voting on passage of the legislation. The legislation was negotiated between the White House and House Republicans to raise the debt ceiling until 2025 and avoid a federal default. The House passed the bill last night with a bipartisan vote of 314-117. Shots rang out while Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after which Trump was seen with blood on his face, near his ear. Campaign officials have said the former president is fine and is receiving medical attention.
Shortly after the incident, politicians’ words of support poured in via social media. The entire Iowa congressional delegation posted on Twitter, now known as X, that they would be praying for Trump.
Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks called on Americans to not only pray for Trump but also for American democracy. “I ask all Americans to pray for the recovery of President Trump and for the future of American Democracy,” Miller-Meeks said.
Sen. Joni Ernst thanked Secret Service and local law enforcement for their actions to protect the former president.
Thankful for the swift response of Secret Service and local law enforcement.
God bless Donald J. Trump.
Keep praying for him and our great country.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds posted about the incident on her Twitter account, as well. Like Miller-Meeks, Reynolds asked people to pray both for the country and for Trump.

Reynolds later issued a statement calling the shooting a “dark day in American history:
“This assassination attempt on a former president, current nominee for president, and leader of the Republican Party marks a dark day in American history. Kevin and I are grateful that President Trump is safe and is doing well. We will continue to pray for him and his family, as well as those who were shot and the family of the individual who was killed.
“As President Trump showed when he walked off the stage, we will not cower to such terror. I will be in Milwaukee this week and will proudly stand with him and our party. America will get through this, together, and President Trump will lead us into the next four years.”
