USA Gymnastics reaffirms ‘full-time’ pursuit of ‘justice’ for Jordan Chiles, Flavor Flav responds
With the 2024 Paris Olympics in the books, USA Gymnastics is still celebrating the achievements of a huge two weeks. But that doesn’t mean the organization is giving up its fight for Jordan Chiles to keep her bronze medal.
USA Gymnastics reaffirmed its support for Chiles, whose bronze medal in the floor exercise is in question after an inquiry. The Court of Arbitration ruled she had to return it even after USA Gymnastics offered additional evidence to support its case for the UCLA star to keep it.
While the organization will continue to celebrate everything from the Olympics, it made one thing clear on X on Tuesday. It’s not going to give up on the fight for Chiles to keep her status as a bronze-medalist.
“As we continue to celebrate the successes of Team USA Gymnasts on social media, know that we are still working full-time to pursue justice for Jordan,” USA Gymnastics’ post read in support of Chiles.
Flavor Flav – a staunch supporter of the Olympics – also responded to the post. He offered to reach out to whoever was necessary to make sure Chiles can keep her medal.
“@USAGym Put me in coach,” he wrote. “Tell me who I need to call and tell em what time it is,!!!”
Chiles’ routine first appeared to put her in fifth behind two gymnasts tied for third with a score of 13.7. However, Team USA used an inquiry to double-check the UCLA star’s score, resulting in a boost to 13.766, taking her to third. Chiles won the bronze medal after taking home a gold in the women’s team finals.
However, on Saturday, the Court of Arbitration ruled the judging panel improperly granted the inquiry, and a court in Switzerland ruled the appeal came in past the deadline. As a result, the judges shouldn’t have granted it, the court argued, and the U.S. Olympic committee appealed the ruling.
USA Gymnastics then formally requested Chiles’ medal to be reinstated, but the Court made a ruling to take it away. It also said it wouldn’t hear new evidence, even though USA Gymnastics was preparing to submit a video showing the inquiry came in ahead of the 1-minute deadline to do so.
“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan.”
