Flounder, Croaker, Spot and More

It was a little overcast first thing this morning, but by this afternoon the sun was shining and it was hot and humid. It is July so that's to be expected, and with no wind it was a nice day to go fishing.
Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break had a couple of nice trips again today with flounder, trout and a bunch of spot for the cleaning table.
Captain Tony Battista of Saltwater Adventures had 7-year-old Hunter from Elkton, MD on board today and he caught his first ever flounder. Hunter was fishing with his dad and grandad and his keeper was 21.5".
Captain Dave Caffrey of On the Run put these guys on two keeper flounder.
Josh Blume caught his first keeper flounder in a while today fishing with Julia Reburn of the Ocean City Fishing Center. Josh used a Deadly Tackle Deadly Double in orange in front of Martha's Landing to land this 20.5" fish and he and Julia had several other throwbacks.
As a father to a special needs child it warms my heart to see the fishing community coming together to do awesome things! Anglers fishing on board the Miss Ocean City had a great time fishing the Wish-A-Fish fishing trip and the kids caught some awesome fish! It's all about those smiles!
Captain Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had some triggerfish, flounder and sea bass on today's trip.
Lot more color in the sky for this morning's departure. Seas were calm, winds light, pretty morning. Easton, Bo & Brody made a fine deployment of 26 blocks (made into 4 block units) and two pyramids on the new barge at Ringmaster's Reef Group. Went down perfect. Giving a flat barge deck extra rugosity makes a big difference in a reef's production. From there we ambled on off a bit more and started fishing.
I tried all day yesterday to put some triggers in the boat. Small flounder about made a nuisance of themselves - some good shots of em - action at least - along with a few keepers that no one thought a nuisance.
Today? Exercising his reef builder's karma, Brody swung the first keeper over the rail - a trigger.
Flounder were not cooperating at all!
Not At All.
Oyyyyy..
Current ripping from the NNE, we needed 10 ounces of lead to hold bottom in just 55ft of water. Clouds of sea bass would produce a few fish - throwbacks mostly, nicked a handful of keepers all day.
Toward the end of our day the current began backing off and coming east. Saw a few throwback flounder then at least. Sea Bass Bob and Keith each boxed one - Keith's was bigger and won the pool.
Forecast offshore today was ugly. Inshore where we were it was nice. Not ten knots of wind. At the weather buoy not a lot further off it was blowing 17 knots..
What the heck..
One forecast for tomorrow splendid; another not. Going to lay in tomorrow for a pit stop - am confident offshore NE winds will aid our cause with mahi. Look forward to Wednesday & Thursday's mahi trips. Have some room on em.
Had a report from a friend doing scientific sampling offshore a bit yesterday (7/20). They had 48.5 degree bottom temps in 125ft of water - and 82 at the surface!
Nuts..
I wasn't given a picture but we did have a rare man-eating skate today. Well, finger eating at least.
Ouch.
Wish I had it on video..
Put fishing new guy, Joe, on the rail today. Used to jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and working for Uncle Sam in foreign countries - Joe's eat up with fishing. I suspect he'll become one of the good ones before he gets his captain's license..
(and, no, it wasn't his finger that fed a man-eating skate..)
Cheers!
Monty
Caught my personal best flounder on the Nantucket Shoals this weekend....check it out!!
