Hundreds Protest FCI Dublin As Potential ICE Facility: Reports
DUBLIN, CA — Roughly 500 protesters gathered in Dublin Saturday to protest rumored plans to turn the shuttered FCI Dublin into an ICE detention facility, according to several reports.Protesters gathered at the corner of Dublin Boulevard and Arnold Drive, where they chanted “No ICE in Dublin” and made impassioned speeches on the rights of immigrants and prisoners. At the southwest corner of the intersection, a much smaller group of counter-protesters voiced their support for ICE and its recent deportations. The two groups had minimal interaction, according to reports.The protest comes in response to different reports that suggest that ICE will use the facility to house detained migrants. ICE officials visited the facility twice in February, and structural assessments conducted by government officials in July were reportedly shared with ICE, union sources told The Los Angeles Times. ICE has not confirmed its plans, but said that they are “exploring all options” to meet current and future detention needs, according to a report from the Bay Area News Group. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons, which is under new leadership, has partnered with ICE to create new detention facilities at five existing prisons across the country to house 700 immigrants, according to KTVU."When ICE doesn't have a place to cage people, there are less raids," said Susan Beaty, an attorney for the California Collaborative for Immigration Justice who represented women who sued the Bureau of Prisons over FCI Dublin abuses. “There are less arrests. We're saying ‘no, we don’t want ICE detention in our community, and we want ICE out of the Bay Area and out of California." The prison was permanently closed in December 2024 after a massive sexual abuse scandal that led to convictions and prison sentences for seven former employees, including former Warden Ray Garcia. In addition to widespread abuse, federal investigators have found that the building violated OSHA standards due to asbestos exposures. Many inmates reported rashes, respiratory issues, and even hearing loss, according to a KTVU report. Several U.S. senators, including Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff, wrote a letter questioning whether the facility was capable of housing anyone. “This prison is not safe, it’s not habitable, it is full of mold and asbestos amid crumbling infrastructure… it cannot house human beings,” Beaty said. “We want the ‘Rape Club’ demolished,” said Kendra Drysdale, a former inmate. “We as survivors deserve to see that building taken down and never, ever, house anyone.”The article Hundreds Protest FCI Dublin As Potential ICE Facility: Reports appeared first on Dublin, CA Patch.
