West Texas FC Defeats Austin United FC 3-2 in Home Opener
By West Texas FC
West Texas FC finally got a break from the road after playing in Lubbock and Denton and hosted Austin United FC for their home opener in front of over 1,000 fans at Astound Broadband Stadium for the “United Supermarkets Youth Soccer Night.”
West Texas won their first game of the season and first leg of the “El Dustico” in Lubbock on May 18 with a 3-1 final. Austin United traveled to Midland after securing the win against the Lubbock Matadors on May 30 in Lubbock and were hoping to go home with two wins on the road.
West Texas FC came out the gate strong, scoring in the fourth minute with a goal from defender Kareem Williams. West Texas would push the lead farther with forward Olivier Correa giving West Texas another goal at the top of the net in the 21st minute.
Austin United would quickly respond with a goal from midfielder Ethan Orozco in the 28th minute, leaving the score at 2-1.
Antoine Marques added another for the hosts in the 56th minute with an assist from Ryan Naidoo to secure the win for West Texas FC. Goalkeeper Christian Sekanina returned to the pitch Saturday with four saves.
Austin United would score another goal in the 85th minute thanks to forward Max Gonzalez, but it was just not enough to get a draw or win. West Texas FC would emerge with all three points thanks to the 3-2 victory.
“First, I want to thank God and the coaches for the opportunity to go out on Saturday to
showcase my talent, but the game itself was fantastic,” Williams commented about the home opener. “My first start of the season and my first goal for the team for me is just a great feeling but mostly I want to say the fans are fabulous. They support us home and away, so definitely Saturday’s win was for them and I hope we can continue to protect our home and keep putting on a show for the supporters while getting the three points.”
Williams joins West Texas FC from his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica and Mid-America Christian University in Oklahoma. Saturday’s match was the first start of the season for Williams.
Correa scored his second goal of the 2024 NPSL season.
“The game went well. I thought we were in control for most of it and we created some chances, moved the ball well, but we lacked concentration in a few moments which led to the two goals we conceded,” Correa noted.
Correa comes to West Texas from his hometown of Montreal, Québec and Jacksonville University where he was an ASUN First Team All-Conference selection.
West Texas FC will start a two-game road trip to play FC Brownsville (June 6) and Laredo Heat SC (June 8). They will return home to take on CF10 Houston FC on June 20 at 7:30 pm at Astound Broadband Stadium for “Bark in the Park Night.”
Austin United FC will host FC Brownsville on June 16 at Round Rock Multipurpose Complex Stadium Field at 7:00 pm.
