7 Empowering Affirmations for Your Recovery Journey
A positive mindset is important for attaining any goal, but it’s especially vital for those in recovery. Concentrating on positive outcomes rather than negative ones can boost one’s self-esteem, fostering the confidence needed in the face of any challenge.
Reciting or writing affirmations can help retrain one’s mindset to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses. It might take some practice at first, but the repetition of “I am” statements can serve as a powerful coping mechanism in times of stress.
To help you reform your mindset, here are seven affirmations, one for each day of the week. Repeat them while looking in the mirror, write them over and over in a journal, or simply reflect on them throughout your day.
Monday: I Am Worthy
This short but sweet affirmation is a reminder that you are deserving of all the good things in life that are now available to you because of your commitment to sobriety. You can even extend this phrase to say specifically what you are worthy of, such as love, respect, or happiness.
Tuesday: I Am Healing
Recovery is a journey, not a destination, so it’s important to celebrate your progress along the way. Every day you remain sober is another day that you are healing from past trauma; every day you are becoming a stronger, healthier person.
Wednesday: I Am Strong in the Face of Any Challenge
Challenges are part of life, but having a positive mindset permits you to view them as opportunities to lean on your resiliency and inner strength. The fact that you are sober proves that you have done and will continue to do difficult things.
Thursday: I Am Able to Make Good Decisions
Before you committed to your sobriety, your decision-making was likely clouded by your addiction. Now that you are free of that grip, you have a clear mind to make better choices and decisions that will have a positive impact on you.
Friday: I Am Surrounded by Love and Support
Recovery can be lonely at times, so take a moment to recognize the people in your life who are rooting for success. They might be family, friends, your sponsor, or peers in group therapy. Take a moment to be grateful for the people who believe in you, and you’ll be more able to believe in yourself.
Saturday: I Am Open to New Possibilities
Addiction might have stalled you in the past, but you live in the present and are able to look forward to the rest of your life. Reclaiming your life in recovery means feeling excited when new and interesting opportunities surface, both personally and professionally. Even amidst uncertainty over how things will ultimately turn out, you are brave and sure of yourself.
Sunday: I Can Do It and I Will Do It
“It” will mean something different for everyone. Focus on a big goal that you have, one that you’re actively working toward little by little, and remind yourself that success is in your future.
Positive affirmations work best when they feel authentic, so be inspired by these statements to craft ones that are personal to your life.
