Halloween is right around the corner and that can only mean one thing: It’s time to haul out the storage bins filled with ghosts, witches, pumpkins, and wait... how did that ornament get in here?Decorating your home for any holiday season is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of hard work. I mean, where do you start? You want to decorate your house for Halloween, but you also want to do something more than throw up a few spiderwebs and place pumpkins on the front steps. So how do you decorate your home in a way that doesn’t take the fun out of the festivities? To help you tackle the task of decorating your house for Halloween, we put together a checklist of things to think about before you head to the store to get your Halloween on.Picking a ThemeThere is no shortage of Halloween-inspired designs to decorate your home with. With such a wide variety of options, picking a theme before you start shopping and adding the little details will save you time. Pumpkin spice and everything niceThink of this theme as a cute and cozy, family-friendly vibe. You can incorporate pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, leaves, burlap, and other autumnal decor. Turn the inside (and outside) of your home into a fall free-for-all that Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin would be proud of: complete with gourds, hay bales, corn stalks, and sunflowers.Spooky and (seriously) scaryIf Halloween at your house means ghosts and goblins than this theme may be for you. Consider elements like fake cobwebs, skeletons, or creepy silhouettes to give guests a fright. You may also want to add tombstones, caution tape, or creepy, crawly creatures to the mix. Dark candles (and candlesticks) add a frightful glow. And don't forget to add ghouls both inside and outside your home.Pop culture-inspiredFrom the beloved Sanderson Sisters and Ghostbusters to Beetlejuice and the Wonderful World of Wizarding (a la Harry Potter), there are plenty of opportunities for pop culture to make its way into your Halloween theme. You can incorporate your favorite fictional characters, spooky or not. Most of the time, you can find fun inflatables for your yard. You can also find statues, knick knacks, pictures, posters, pillows, and other fun pop culture-inspired Halloween-themed decor. Choosing a Color SchemeNow that you have an idea of your Halloween theme, choosing the right color scheme can really help pull it all together. There’s no decorating rule that says you can’t mix and match or throw your own unique take into the mix, but to get started, consider these basic color combinations.Orange and blackIt wouldn’t be Halloween without the classic combo. Nearly any Halloween decoration you find will fall into one (or both) of these color categories. Halloween staples like pumpkins come in various hues of oranges, ambers, and spice, and items like bats and witch hats can almost always be found in black. You can even find this dynamic color duo in the smallest elements, like candy corn.Purple and greenThese can be used to compliment the primary color scheme or be front and center on their own. Despite not being opposites on the color wheel, these hues complement each other nicely and can be found in many Halloween decorations and props, like a wicked witch’s brew or a friendly Frankenstein. Harvest colorsIf you aim to inspire the feeling of the pumpkin patch, a harvest color scheme might be the right choice for your Halloween home decor. This palette looks like autumnal colors in all their natural glory. From creams and cranberries to wheat and pale greens, you’ll find that more demure (mindful and cutesy) shades of the classic blacks, oranges, purples, and greens fit into this harvest range.Lighting OptionsHaving the right lighting can dramatically change the appearance of your home. In fact, a few well-placed blubs or candles can make or break your Halloween look. And whether you choose to set up lighting inside, outside, or both, know it can totally change the ambiance. Outdoor lightingThere are tons of options for outdoor lighting to add a little fright to Halloween nights. Floodlights can be used to spotlight inflatables on the lawn or highlight ghoulish decor. If you’re looking for something more subtle, you can string twinkle lights in Halloween-themed garland, switch out your porch lights to match your color scheme, or even just light up jack-o-lanterns on the porch (consider flameless options for safety). Indoor lightingFeel free to use some of the same lighting techniques indoors as you do outside. Colored lights, flameless candles, and twinkle lights weaving through your Halloween decor are great options. You also might enjoy plugging in spooky chandeliers or candelabras or incorporating decor that lights up, like bubbling cauldrons or crystal balls. Consider using LED lighting when possible for energy efficiency and to protect your curious little monster’s fingers from getting burnt. Stocking Up on SuppliesNow that you’ve picked a theme, landed on a color palette, and decided on just the right lighting, it’s time to start stocking up on supplies to decorate your house for Halloween. Shop the salesAs much fun as it is to decorate, no one wants to break the bank creating a whimsical and wonderful happy Halloween. When you make your shopping list, make sure that you check your current inventory before heading out to avoid picking up duplicates. Also, look into sales with your favorite retailers and see if they offer a price match option. ReusableDepending on the material your decorations are made of, you might not be able to get several years of use out of them. When you’re stocking up on supplies for decorating, consider the quality of the products so they last and can be used again and again. Storing them for next year Once spooky season is over, organize your decor for next year. The day after Halloween, you’ll likely find tons of decor on sale, along with storage bins and other large containers to tuck away your decorations until next year.
